Weekend Reminders

Today’s post is limited to events taking place this weekend that I’ve mentioned previously on Broken Hearted Toy. This gives readers an extra day’s additional notice, and since the events won’t be repeated in tomorrow’s Slumgullion, helps streamline my Friday post. Slumgullion won’t be entirely new. I’ll keep mentioning upcoming events up to and including the Thursday prior to the weekend they take place.

Lollapalooza kicked off today at Grant Park in downtown Chicago with headline acts Megan Thee Stallion and Hozier. SZA and Stray Kids top the bill tomorrow; The Killers, Future X, Metro Boomin, and Skrillex are the main acts for Saturday. Lollapalooza wraps up Sunday night with Blink-182 and Melanie Martinez. Local acts Friko and Brigitte Calls Me Baby, as well as the UK quintet The Last Dinner Party—all of which have been getting loads of airplay on WXRT here in Chicago—are also scheduled this weekend.

The U.S. leg of Graham Nash’s More Evenings Of Songs And Stories 2024 tour kicks off tomorrow in Boulder, CO. Other cities include Denver, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Omaha. Nash won't come to Chicago, but he has shows in neighboring Evanston on October 15 and 16. Check out his official website for the full list and ticket information.

Our House - The Music Of CSNY, which features musicians who are related to or have worked with David Crosby, Neil Young, and Graham Nash, is coming to the Des Plaines Theatre in Illinois this Saturday. The music starts at 8:00 pm.

The 25th Annual International Pop Overthrow - Los Angeles kicks off tomorrow at the Redwood Bar in L.A. with six acts. Over 50 acts will have performed at the festival by the time it wraps up on Saturday, August 10.

The classy Chicago-based sextet and Pravda Records recording act The Imperial Sound will perform tomorrow night at Hey Nonny’s in Arlington Heights.

The Northman Riverwalk continues to give tourists and locals an opportunity to enjoy a variety of live music and food outdoors with an impressive view of downtown Chicago. Tomorrow’s 6:00 pm show features the steel drum band Caught Steelin’ bringing elements of calypso, jazz and reggae to pop and rock hit songs. Saturday’s 3:00 pm show will find The Sam Robinson Quintet playing “straight-ahead jazz, mainly from the hard-bop/post-bop era.” On Sunday, keyboards player/singer Kara Kesselring will offer a mix of originals and covers that tap into musicals, jazz, and pop. The Northman Riverwalk is located on the Chicago River at 233 N. Riverwalk.

Phil Angotti and Friends (Casey McDonough, John San Juan, and John Perrin) will recreate the setlist from The Beatles’ 1966 concert at Candlestick Park this Sunday as part of the Beatles Brunch series at City Winery Chicago. The music starts at noon.
