Today’s post is focused on events taking place this weekend that I’ve mentioned previously on Broken Hearted Toy. This gives readers an extra day’s additional notice, and since the events won’t be repeated in tomorrow’s Slumgullion, helps streamline my Friday post. Slumgullion won’t be entirely new. I’ll keep mentioning upcoming events up to and including the Thursday prior to the weekend they take place.
But first, here are a few options for tonight, depending on when you read this column:
Black Cat Heart Attack will unveil its new single “The Instigator” during a set at Montrose Saloon. It’s part of the monthly Resident Embryo 2024 series, in which Chicago-based indie rockers The Embryos perform songs (including from their latest album Selling What You Want To Buy), and invite special guests to join them. The power pop trio Thrift Store Halo, which is pretty busy these days, is also on the bill. The music starts at 8:00 pm; Montrose Saloon is located at 2933 W. Montrose on Chicago’s north side.
Cobra Lounge, at 235 N. Ashland, also has a triple bill of Chicago acts scheduled for tonight. Power pop veterans Phil Yates And The Affiliates; the trio xyzxyz; and quartet Surgery Cult will be performing. The music starts at 8:00 pm.
And now, the reminders:
The PureSoul Presents: Soul Brunch Series at City Winery Chicago continues this Saturday, August 10 at noon with Divas Of Dance: Chic, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross.
The Fest For Beatles Fans - Chicago convention returns to the Hyatt Regency O’Hare tomorrow night and will entertain Beatles fanatics through Sunday evening. The in-person guest list includes Micky Dolenz from The Monkees; Randy Bachman from The Guess Who and his son Tal; British Invasion singer Billy J. Kramer; lead guitarist Laurence Juber and drummer Steve Holley from Paul McCartney’s Wings; and former Official Beatles Fan Club president Freda Kelly. The numerous live performers will include The Weeklings, who’ll also share a video of their new song “Mr. Soul Satisfaction” with Peter Noone for the first time anywhere on Saturday. WXRT DJ and Breakfast With The Beatles program host Terri Hemmert will return as The Fest’s Master Of Ceremonies, with Tom Francine as Assistant Master Of Ceremonies.
With this weekend’s weather looking perfect for outside festivities, The Northman Riverwalk in downtown Chicago has options for all three days. Indiana-based Americana-roots rockers The Failers have a show at 6:00 pm tomorrow, and on Saturday, The Northman Riverwalk offers Chicago club scene veterans Superfrye and Valiant 72s at 3:00 pm, and the multi-member brass and drums ensemble Environmental Encroachment at 6:00 pm. Sunday’s 3:00 pm show will feature the Event Horizon Jazz Quartet performing original material composed by band members Jim Kaczmarek and Scott Mertens. The Northman Riverwalk is located on the Chicago River at 233 N. Riverwalk.
