Slumgullion

Just a reminder that this is Bandcamp Friday, which means the platform waives its revenue share in support of the artists. The event happens on the first Friday of each month. I participated today by downloading The Window by Ratboys. Led by vocalist Julia Steiner, the Chicago-based quartet creates guitar-driven alt rock that drifts between hard-edged and atmospheric material. I also downloaded the impressive EP Better Every Day by Stars Like Ours, a trio from Boston.

It’s been encouraging to hear FM radio station WXRT supporting the local music scene by playing bands such as Horsegirl and Ratboys. Also, these two acts benefitted by having full-page profiles written by columnist Britt Julious run in the Chicago Tribune.

Beatles fans can get a double dose of John Lennon songs at Martyrs’on Chicago’s north side tomorrow when Phil Angotti and Friends perform two separate tribute shows (one at 3:00 pm and one at 8:00 pm) to celebrate what would have been Lennon’s 83rd birthday. The two shows combined will add up to 83 songs, with Angotti being joined by Casey McDonough, John San Juan, John Perrin, Carolyn Englemann, Tom Ryan, Blair Holmes, Eric Howell, Ellis Clark and Tony Richards and Rich Parenti. Admission for each is $20.

An Introduction To . . . The Luck Of Eden Hall, which has been issued on the U.K. indie label Fruits de Mer, is now available as a CD or to download from the official The Luck Of Eden Hall Bandcamp page. It also has previously unreleased recordings, such as a cover of David Bowie & Iggy Pop’s “China Girl” recorded live with members of the band Sendelica.

It looks like this Sunday’s show will include a few Cohen originals as well.

The recent release of Tim - Let It Bleed Edition, an expanded 4 CD/1LP version of The Replacements’ 1985 album Tim, has been met with widespread critical acclaim and ecstatic comments on social media. Disc 4 of the expanded Tim features 28 songs recorded live at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro venue in 1986.
