Here’s a brand new Halloween song profile for the 2023 BHT list.
Over the years, I’ve occasionally picked an instrumental as a Halloween-appropriate song, with Henry Mancini’s “Experiment In Terror” being the best example. But an instrumental doesn’t have to evoke horror films from the old TV show Creature Features to make my list. A spooky song without lyrics can sometimes be more effective if it sets your imagination free to conjure your own frightening scenario. Or it might make you want to dance around in a Halloween costume.
Which leads to today’s selection, which comes from The Mobbs and their 2011 debut album, It’s . . . The Mobbs! The English trio taps into the early days of The Yardbirds and The Who, with loads of sonic blasts, rave ups, and an occasional dash of Monty Python style humor. “Pull Yourself Together!!!” features lead vocalist-guitarist Joe B. Humbled occasionally shouting the title in John Cleese fashion over an otherwise instrumental romp with twanging guitars and an ominous bass line. Elsewhere on the album, Humbled declares, “I’ve got the ravings of a madman.”
Listening to “Pull Yourself Together!!!,” my warped imagination sees zombies losing their limbs while dancing The Twist, and futilely trying to stick them back on again. But it’s all in good fun.
