Halloween Song: Charming Disaster - “Disembodied Head”

Here’s another brand new Halloween song profile for 2023.

To be honest, I had never heard of Charming Disaster before I saw a Facebook graphic promoting a four-act gig the Brooklyn-based, goth-folk duo is headlining this Friday at Reggies Music Joint in Chicago. It was posted by The Handcuffs, a band I’ve come to greatly admire over the course of four albums and countless live appearances. The self-described “twist o’hard-edged whatever” cabaret trio Tennis Court Oath and the glam marching band Clamor And Lace Noise Brigade are the other two acts. I mentioned the Reggies Music Joint showcase as part of my Incoming post this past Monday.

My research took me to the Charming Disaster Facebook page, which immediately commands the viewer’s attention. You’d feel lucky to have Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris show up at your Halloween party, and probably a little afraid. Their recently released album Super Natural History offers a number of  spooky tunes, including “Monsters,” “Grimoire,” and “Bat Song.” Some are ironically delicate ballads and cabaret numbers, while others sport indie rock arrangements.

“Disembodied Head” is the track I’d most recommend for a Halloween party playlist. Bisker and Morris take a mad scientist movie cliché and describe how that would actually feel. Using their imaginations and clever wordplay, they offer observations such as “Wake one day and here you are/You’re just a brain inside a jar” over a catchy guitar arrangement. “Now what you get is what you see/You’re on your own got nobody.” The song might also serve as a satire on meditation and the dangers of overthinking things. At any rate, it’s a lot of fun.
