Saturday Slumgullion

Yesterday’s Slumgullion was a bit short due to my having a family-related event, so here’s a second helping.

The 19th Annual CHIRP Record Fair And Other Delights takes place next Saturday, October 21 at the Local 130 Plumbers Union Hall (1340 W. Washington) in Chicago. Sponsored by CHIRP Radio (Chicago Independent Radio Project), the event attracts several vendors offering an amazing selection of vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and posters. Entertainment includes live performance by Baby Teeth, Madame Reaper, Jessica Risker, and Glad Rags, as well as DJs RP Boo, Ovef Ow, and Heart of Chicago Soul Club. Admission from 10:00 am onward is $10; early admission from 8:00 to 10:00 am costs $25, with readmission allowed all day.

Ringo Starr’s latest EP, Rewind Forward, came out yesterday in digital, CD and 10-inch vinyl formats. In other Beatles-related news, Dhani Harrison has a concert coming up next Wednesday, October 18 at the Omeara venue in London.

Local blues label Delmark Records will kick off a showcase of its acts tomorrow at Buddy Guy’s Legends in downtown Chicago, and it will continue each night through October 21.

The Three O’Clock will re-release their Paisley Underground masterpiece Sixteen Tambourines album with a new cover and remastered tracks in vinyl, CD, and the stream formats next Friday, October 20.

Musician/teacher/author Freda Love Smith will discuss her book I Quit Everything at SPACE in Evanston on Sunday, October 22. Her former band mate in The Blake Babies, John Strohm, will perform songs from his new solo effort Something To Look Forward To. The event starts at 7:00 pm.

Phil Angotti and Friends will continue their Beatles Brunch series at City Winery Chicago next Sunday, October 22. Later that day at the venue, Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues will perform an engaging mix of blues and classical. Moody Blues vocalist-guitarist Justin Hayward has sold out his October 23 at City Winery Chicago, and there’s a low ticket alert for his show there on the following day.

Rich Cotovsky, former Artistic Director at the Mary-Arrchie Theater and widely respected around the Chicago theatre scene, will be involved with the City Lit Theater adaption of the 1955 film Night Of The Hunter opening next Friday.

I recently mentioned that Graham Nash has partnered with British artist Tim Wakefield and his Soundwavesart Foundation to offer limited-edition artwork inspired by Nash’s “Our House” and “Teach Your Children” to benefit Children In Conflict. In a similar vein, noted photographer Henry Diltz has joined forces with the Candystock on a series of amazing photo books that will benefit cancer awareness and treatment. Each book is devoted to a single musician, and you can choose from Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, and Micky Dolenz. Each book contains 40 photos and sells for $24.

Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein will release a new Sleater-Kinney album titled Little Rope on January 19.

Lit And Luz: A Celebration Of Language, Literature And Art will continue its run through October 21 at  at various locations in the city. It’s celebrating its 10th year, and is being sponsored by Chicago Art Department and other local arts groups.

 

The recently issued An Introduction To . . . The Luck Of Eden Hall on U.K. indie label Fruits de Mer, is also available as a CD or as a download from the official The Luck Of Eden Hall Bandcamp page.

Performances of a new production of Monty Python’s Spamalot, directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodeson, will start on Halloween night at the St. James Theatre in New York. Also, the film Monty Python And The Holy Grail will be back in theaters at some point this fall. 

U2’s impressive new single “Atomic City” is available to pre-order in limited-edition photoluminescent transparent seven-inch single and CD formats at the band’s official online shop. It’s being marketed (correctly) as “70s post-punk with a nod to Blondie.”

Sincere music for your pumpkin patch. The Mich Shirey Trio will perform the entire soundtrack from the seasonal classic It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown during a Guitar for Guaraldi event from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Montrose Saloon tomorrow. The venue’s website promises the soundtrack, as well as other Vince Guaraldi material, will be lovingly arranged for guitar.
