Here’s hoping everyone is already enjoying their extended Labor Day weekend. Some of this edition of Slumgullion will repeat news from my Events To Remember In September post earlier today, just in case anyone missed that one. Plus, I’ve added info to a few of the items. 

Out Of Time: The Material Issue Story, director Balin Schneider’s documentary on the ill-fated Chicago-based power pop trio Material Issue, will be one of 11 movies screened when the very first CHIRP Music Film Festival  runs at the Davis Theater September 14 – 17. Out Of Time will serve as the event’s finale, and it’s the only screening that will be followed by “live performances by local bands,” according to the official website. The CHIRP Radio 107.1FM event will also screen the music-related movies The Elephant 6 Recording Co.; Moonage Daydream; Repo Man; The Blues Brothers; Stony Island; Big Star - Nothing Can Hurt Me; Almost Famous; Aretha Franklin: Amazing Grace; Wattstax; and Fanny: The Right To Rock. Show times vary from afternoon to evening; Davis Theater is located at 4614 N. Lincoln Avenue.

Carla Olson, the singer-guitarist known for fronting the Americana rock band The Textones, as well as for her successful solo career and collaborations with Mick Taylor from The Rolling Stones and Gene Clark from The Byrds, has a new album on the way titled Have Harmony, Will Travel 3. Clark is once again onboard, along with Jonathan Lea, who performs with The Jigsaw Seen and The Dave Davies Band. Former Hollies lead vocalist/current solo artist Allan Clarke co-wrote two songs with Olson and provides guest vocals on the album. Have Harmony, Will Travel 3 is available to pre-order on Amazon. On an interesting side note, Olson also once recorded with Mikael Rikfors, who for a short time, was Clarke’s replacement in The Hollies.

Chicago-based power pop musician Dolph Chaney has a new album coming out via Big Stir Records on October 6. Simply titled Mug, it’s a mix of catchy rockers and tuneful ballads, and is now available for pre-order. 

Nowhere Else Festival, the annual event staged by Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler from the critically acclaimed Americana band Over The Rhine, kicked off today and will run through Sunday in Clinton County, Ohio. The event features live music, as well as an art gallery and various music-related workshops.

After wrapping up a successful American tour, Graham Nash has embarked on a European trek that will include shows in Denmark, England, Switzerland, Germany, Scotland, France, Belgium, and Holland through the month of September.

The Tom Petty: Among The Wildflowers exhibit continues its six-month run at the Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention in Gainesville, FL. It offers a 700 square foot collection of artifacts, including some from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and other exclusive memorabilia.

The Schaumburg SeptemberFest runs September 2– 4, with Blue Oyster Cult, The BoDeans, and Beach Boys member Al Jardine And His Endless Summer Band serving as the headline acts.

San Francisco Sounds: A Place In Time, the two-part documentary now streaming on MGM+, features interviews with and vintage performance footage of some of the best known acts from the city’s psychedelic heyday in late 1960s through the mid 1970s. San Francisco Sounds was created by Anoosh Tertzakian and Alison Ellwood, who previously gave us the Laurel Canyon documentary.

Amazing Heeby Jeebies, the Chicago-based garage rock and rockabilly outfit that conjures tales of werewolves, mummies, and other frightful creatures, will perform this Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at The Northman Riverwalk. It’s located at 233 E. Riverwalk in downtown Chicago.

The latest album from The Pretenders will be released two weeks from today, on September 15. Judging from the songs “A Love” and “Let The Sun Come In,” which were released in advance, Relentless will be another winning effort from Chrissie Hynde and her mates.

The West Loop Art Fest returns for its fifth year tomorrow and Sunday, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on each day. There will be live music, art and crafts. 

The unconventional and beloved A Red Orchid Theatre will kick off its 2023-24 season with the premiere of Brett Neveu’s Revolution on September 7. 

Tickets are now on sale today for Bob Dylan’s October 6, 7, and 8 concerts at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Dylan is currently in the midst of an epic tour titled Things Aren’t The Way They Were . . . “Rough And Rowdy Ways.”

Great Moments in Vinyl, a collection area musicians that performs tribute shows, will showcase the songs of Tina Turner at the Beverly Arts Center on September 8.

The graphic novel The Fifth Beatle - The Brian Epstein Story is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a new, expanded edition that’s available for pre-order from Dark Horse/Random House. Written by Vivek J. Tiwary and illustrated by Andrew C. Robinson, Kyle Baker, and Steve Dutro, The Fifth Beatle celebrates Epstein’s essential role in The Beatles’ success. The anniversary edition features a new cover, created by Christopher Brunner and Rico Renzi.

Liar’s Club on Chicago’s north side will field four bands in one night on September 8. Those acts are Thorazine Hammer, Triple, Code Noir, and Propane Propane.

The Three O’Clock will re-release their Paisley Underground masterpiece Sixteen Tambourines album with a new cover and remastered tracks in vinyl, CD, and the stream formats on October 20. Some of the highlights include “Jet Fighter,” “Stupid Einstein,” “When Lightning Strikes,” the epic “A Day In Erotica,” and a cover of The Bee Gees’ “In My Own Time.”

The 38th Annual Printers Row Lit Fest takes place September 9 and 10, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, on Dearborn between Polk Street and Ida B. Wells Drive.

Phil Angotti And Friends will continue their Beatles Brunch series at City Winery Chicago at noon on September 10.

The Who have a 50th anniversary edition of their Who’s Next album coming out on September 14 that will include songs from Pete Townshend’s Life House project. As with most anniversary releases from major acts, Who’s Next - Life House will be available in various formats. They range from a 10 CD set that also includes a Blu-ray, posters, a t-shirt and two books for $305.98 to a single CD with a 12-page booklet for $13.98. All the versions are now available for pre-order on the official Who website.

The 10th annual Elgin Fringe Fest takes place September 1 through 10, although most productions will run September 7 – 10.

All four members of Talking Heads will get together on September 11 at The Toronto International Film Festival. Noted director Spike Lee will conduct an interview with David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison regarding the newly restored in 4K, 40th Anniversary edition of Jonathan Demme’s amazing Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense.

Michael Steven Cohen will perform Vintage Love Songs From The Great American Songbook in the Beer Garden at Montrose Saloon from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on September 10.

The Des Plaines Theatre in downtown Des Plaines will present the Supernatural - Santana Tribute on September 15.

This year’s Riot Fest will take place in Douglass Park on the weekend of September 15 – 17. Headline acts for include The Cure, Foo Fighters, and Death Cab For Cutie. added. The festival, and also feature Kim Gordon, Parliament Funkadelic featuring George Clinton, The Breeders, Warpaint, Smoking Popes, The Exploited, Tegan And Sara, White Reaper, Screaming Females, and Ani DiFranco.
