Events To Remember In September


There’s still time to enjoy entertainment outside in the warm sunshine, as well as within the four walls of clubs and theaters. I’m hoping to go into more details on all of these in the coming weeks, and there are sure to be more events that pop up during that time. Be sure to check social media and official websites for your favorite performers and venues so you don’t miss anything.

Scott Niekelski, lead vocalist-guitarist with the hard-edged power pop band Go Time!, will continue his series of solo shows with a performance on September 1 at BuckleDown Brewery in Lyons.


The Cubby Bear, on north Clark Street just outside Wrigley Field, will offer a triple bill of The Spindles, Urban Twang, and Paige & The Kaisers on September 1.


Americana band Over The Rhine, led by Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, will hold its annual Nowhere Else Festival in Clinton County, Ohio on the weekend of September 1 – 3. The event features live music, as well as an art gallery and workshops.


Graham Nash has embarked on a European trek that will include shows in Denmark, England, Switzerland, Germany, Scotland, France, Belgium, and Holland throughout the month of September.


Irish Days returns to Long Grove on the weekend of September 2 – 4. The event will include performances by Academy Of Irish Music; McNulty School Of Irish Dance; Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band; The Larkin and Moran Brothers; Without U2; Trinity School Of Dance; and Hogan School Of Dance.


The Schaumburg SeptemberFest runs September 2– 4, with Blue Oyster Cult, The BoDeans, and Al Jardine And His Endless Summer Band serving as the headline acts.


The Chicago-based garage rock and rockabilly band Amazing Heeby Jeebies will perform on September 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at The Northman Riverwalk downtown.


The 10th annual Elgin Fringe Fest takes place September 1 through 10, although most productions will run September 7 – 10.


The West Loop Art Fest is back for its fifth year on September 2 and 3 from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm each day. There will be live music, art and crafts. 


The Chicago-based Congo Square Theatre Company, now in its 25th year, will present the rolling world premiere of Inda Craig-Galván’s Welcome To Matteson on September 6. Directed by Ericka Ratcliff, the production runs through October 1.  


The unconventional and beloved A Red Orchid Theatre will kick off its 2023-24 season with the premiere of Brett Neveu’s Revolution on September 7. 


Great Moments in Vinyl, a collection area musicians that performs tribute shows, will showcase the songs of Tina Turner at the Beverly Arts Center on September 8.


Liar’s Club on Chicago’s north side will field four bands in one night on September 8. Those acts are Thorazine Hammer, Triple, Code Noir, and Propane Propane.


Taste of Chicago Grant Park takes place on the weekend of September 8 – 10. This year’s headliners are Whitney; White Mystery; Nola Adé; Cloud Farmers; ÉSSO; Lupita Infante with Mariachi Sirenas; Proyecto Uno; Mamii; Slique Jay Adams;  Meagan McNeal; and Masters of the Mic: Hip Hop 50 featuring Doug E. Fresh, EPMD, KRS-One and Slick Rick.


The 18th Annual Lakeview East Festival of the Arts will be staged on Broadway from Belmont to Hawthorne on September 9 and 10. In addition to 150 artists showcasing their work, there will be live music and food vendors.


The 38th Annual Printers Row Lit Fest takes place September 9 and 10, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, on Dearborn between Polk Street and Ida B. Wells Drive. Freda Love Smith; Jon Langford; Mark Guarino; Dave Hoekstra; Rick Kogan; Maureen Ryan; and Chicago’s first Poet Laureate avery r. young are among the may speakers scheduled to appear.


Phil Angotti And Friends will continue their Beatles Brunch series at City Winery Chicago at noon on September 10.


Michael Steven Cohen will perform Vintage Love Songs From The Great American Songbook in the Beer Garden at Montrose Saloon from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on September 10.


All four members of Talking Heads will get together on September 11 at The Toronto International Film Festival. Noted director Spike Lee will conduct an interview with David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison regarding the newly restored in 4K, 40th Anniversary edition of Jonathan Demme’s amazing Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense.


The latest edition of the Gman Author Series at Gman Tavern on Clark Street comes at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, September 12 with a Chicago Book Party for the 160-page Bowie - Stardust, Rayguns and Moonage Daydreams graphic novel. 


The Who have a 50th anniversary edition of their Who’s Next album coming out on September 14 that will include songs from Pete Townshend’s Life House project.


CHIRP Radio 107.1FM will stage its very first CHIRP Music Film Festival at the Davis Theater on Lincoln Avenue September 14 – 17. Eleven music-related movies will be shown, including The Blues Brothers; Big Star - Nothing Can Hurt Me; Wattstax; and Out Of Time: The Material Issue Story.


The Des Plaines Theatre in downtown Des Plaines will present the Supernatural - Santana Tribute on September 15.


The latest album from The Pretenders is due out September 15. The few singles that have been released in advance strongly suggest Relentless will be another winning effort from Chrissie Hynde and her mates.


This year’s Riot Fest will take place in Douglass Park on the weekend of September 15 – 17. Headline acts include The Cure, Foo Fighters, and Death Cab For Cutie. added. The festival will also feature Kim Gordon; Parliament Funkadelic featuring George Clinton; The Breeders; Warpaint; Smoking Popes; The Exploited; Tegan And Sara; White Reaper; Screaming Females; and Ani DiFranco.


The Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66, located at 9 W. Cass Street in Joliet, has an impressive lineup of local acts scheduled for the September 16 VIP Pre-Party to its 3rd Annual Illinois Rock & Roll Museum Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on September 17. The Pre-Party takes place at The Forge venue, which at 22 W. Cass Street, is within walking distance of the Museum.


The Rock-Expo in Aurora takes place on September 16 from noon to 5:00 pm at Two Brothers Roundhouse. The event will offer vinyl records, memorabilia, books and magazines. 


Freda Love Smith, whose rock and roll career kicked off in the mid-1980s as a member of the Boston-based Blake Babies with Juliana Hatfield and John Strohm, has a book launch for her I Quit Everything memoir on September 19 at Books And Beginnings in Evanston.


Blues artist Calvin Jones is coming to The Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette, IL on September 19.

 

Chicago-based neo-soul band The Imperial Sound has a gig at The Hideout on September 21.


Alt rock band Reaction Formation is going to have a 40th Anniversary Reunion Show at GMan Tavern near Wrigley Field on September 22. 


The 10th Annual Beverly Art Walk takes place on September 23 from noon to 5:00 pm. 


The Squeeze and The Psychedelic Furs combination tour comes to The Salt Shed in Chicago on September 23.


Chicago alt rock band whitewolfsonicprincess will perform with The Flying Chaucers and The Leisure Committee at Custer Street Oasis, in the vicinity of La Principal restaurant. on September 24.


The Des Plaines Theatre in downtown Des Plaines will present the Pink Floyd tribute Echoes Of Pompeii on September 28.


Peter Gabriel’s i/o The Tour will bring him to Chicago at the United Center on September 30.
