A new CD titled An Introduction To . . . The Luck Of Eden Hall will be issued on the U.K. indie label Fruits der Mer Records in early October. Two things might seem odd about the above sentence: The Luck Of Eden Hall is a Chicago band, and Fruits de Mer is known as a vinyl-only record company. As for the first issue, The Luck Of Eden Hall has mastered the mind-altering psychedelic sound the label specializes in, and for the second issue, Fruits de Mer is now releasing CDs.
“And as we launched Fruits de Mer as a vinyl label back in 2008 just at the point when vinyl was declared dead and buried,” the official website explains, “what better time to launch a series of CDs as the compact disc is widely reported to be in terminal decline? That said, we are doing our best give the CDs a bit of vinyl feel, thanks to Sam Giles Design.” Over the years, Fruits de Mer would send out promo CDs for their upcoming vinyl releases.
Just a reminder that The Rolling Stones will discuss their upcoming album Hackney Diamonds with Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon in a globally screened interview on the band’s YouTube page tomorrow. Not in the Tonight Show studio but on location in the Hackney district in London. The fact that the Stones’ first studio album of original material in 18 years is named after a neighborhood in England makes one wonder if the tracks will have an autobiographical feel. Fallon will conduct the interview with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood. This all takes place at 2:30 pm British Standard Time, so fans will need gauge what that translates to in their own time zone. I believe it’s 8:30 am Central Stand Time in America.
DJ Skid Licious will spin new wave, post punk, indie, and electro records from 11:00 pm to 4:00 am at his Atomic gig this Friday night at The Continental. The venue is located at 2801 W. Chicago Avenue. It’s great seeing a graphic of Bohemia, one of Chicago’s first and best punk bands on the Skid’s social media posts.
Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO, the indie musician’s Electric Light Orchestra tribute album, will be available to pre-order this Friday on Bandcamp. It’s due out in November but the two songs (“I Can’t Get It Out Of My Head” and “Don’t Bring Me Down”) that are already available to download suggest this is going to a fun collection.
Reaction Formation, a band I had the honor of covering for the Illinois Entertainer several years back, is going to have a 40th Anniversary Reunion Show at GMan Tavern near Wrigley Field on September 22. The event’s Facebook post promises, “40 years of songs, stories, road trips, aspirations, daytime dreams, ragged and hopeful indie guitar rock, and memories that have yet to fade.”
The Rock-Expo in Aurora takes place on September 16 from noon to 5:00 pm at Two Brothers Roundhouse. The event will offer vinyl records, memorabilia, books and magazines. As noted by former Illinois Entertainer publisher Ken Voss on Facebook, author John Lyons will be on hand to discuss and sign copies of his book Joy and Fear: The Beatles Chicago and the Sixties.
