Singer-guitarist Joe Di Zillo’s third album Bringing It Back is now available in vinyl and digital formats on his Bandcamp page. He has a definite knack for catchy, energetic arrangements and clever lyrics. With help from six musicians, Di Zillo brings loads of energy to these tracks, particularly “Lotta Love,” “One Way Love” and “Outta The Blue.” “Copper” rocks as well, with a bit of country and western swing added for fun, while “Come Home Tonight” is more laid back but still melodic. Note: there are a limited number of vinyl editions of Bringing It Back available, so act quick if you're turntable-inclined.
Joe Di Zillo has a 7:00 pm record release bash for Bringing It Back this Saturday at the Val's Halla in venue in Oak Park.
It’s been two years since I saw Sonic45, the self-proclaimed “Chicago-based new-wave quintet” led by sports broadcaster/musician/songwriter Len Kasper, perform at the Hey Nonny venue in Arlington Heights. When describing that show in a post here on BHT, I noted, “In addition to playing songs from their impressive debut Space And Time, Sonic45 unveiled several new compositions that proved their songs just keep getting better and better.” I’m not sure how many of those songs are on their brand new Supersonic release, but it’s definitely an impressive effort.
The material ranges from the majestic and steady beat of “You And I Are Stereo” and “Flying Away” to the unbridled energy of the title track and “Deep Within Your Soul.” The mood is often dark, especially on the pulsating “The Phantom,” which warns, “The world’s not as safe as you’d like it to be,” and “If you don’t believe the Phantom is real, don’t close your eyes you will be his next meal.” The enchanting and acoustic “When The Night Is Gone” makes for an intriguing change of pace. In addition to Kasper, the band features Matt Spiegel, Dag Juhlin, Gerald Dowd, and Liam Davis—all veterans of critically acclaimed Chicago area acts.
Sonic45 has a Supersonic Record Release Party this Saturday at SPACE in Evanston.
