Of course, there are a lot more things than holiday dinners and entertainment events to be thankful for, but here’s a list of fun and interesting suggestions for November. As with each of my monthly previews, this is just a sampling of what’s available, and I’ll probably be adding events to this list as the weeks go by.
“Now And Then,” which is being described as “the last new Beatles song,” will be released on November 2, along with a 2023 mix of The Beatles’ first ever single “Love Me Do.” The double single will be offered in seven-inch and twelve-inch vinyl formats.
Penthouse Sweets, Tyre Fyre, and Erik Angyus will perform on November 2 at Montrose Saloon on Chicago’s north side.
The Destinos: 6th Chicago International Latino Theater Festival will run through November 12 at numerous venues around the city.
WXRT will celebrate the 50 years radio personality Terri Hemmert has been on the air at the Chicago rock station on November 3 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
The 29th Annual Black Harvest Film Festival opens on November 3 and will run through November 16 at the Gene Siskel Film Center in downtown Chicago.
Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr, a collection of tracks from the former Smiths guitarist is coming out on November 3.
The Mercury Theater’s production of Young Frankenstein will run Wednesday through Sunday through all of November.
Micky Dolenz will release his new EP Dolenz Sings R.E.M. in vinyl and CD formats on November 3.
StoryStudio Chicago will hold its 6th Annual Writers Festival at The Center On Halsted on the weekend of November 4 and 5. The event will offer classes, panels, and social events.
Singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn has concerts at The Old Town School Of Folk Music on November 3 and 4.
The Last Waltz, director Martin Scorsese’s 1978 classic concert film of The Band commemorating its retirement (at the time) with assorted fabulous guests, will return to theaters for one night only on November 5. The event marks the film’s 45th anniversary.
Juniper, the L.A.-based, single-named vocalist has a new single titled “I Was Thinking About You” coming out November 7.
The Stones And Brian Jones, a new documentary from Magnolia Pictures, will be screened in theaters across America as a one-night-only special preview on November 7. It has a general release date of November 17.
Liz Phair's Guyville Tour, with special guest Blondshell, kicks off on November 7 in El Cajon, California.
The Bad Examples, the Chicago-based band whose catchy indie rock tunes are often reminiscent of Squeeze, will be at FitzGerald’s in Berwyn on November 10.
The Zombies will hold their first annual Begin Here Festival in their home town of St. Albans in the U.K. on the weekend of November 10 - 12. They’ll use that occasion to launch their own museum.
The Chicago-based seven-piece Talking Heads tribute band Start Making Sense will perform at Martyrs' on Lincoln Avenue on November 10 and 11.
The Spindles, Vinyl Idols, and Go Time! will combine for an evening of catchy indie rock at Montrose Saloon on Chicago’s north side on November 11.
Music On Stage will present Plaid Tidings - A Special Holiday Edition Of Forever Plaid, at Cutting Hall in Palatine from November 11 to November 26.
The Eyes Have It - All-Star Line-up Of Chicago’s Finest Songwriters will celebrate the musical vision of Michael Teach on November 12 at Montrose Saloon on Chicago’s north side. Teach is the co-founder of the original music podcast Chicago Acoustic Underground.
Leg Three of Depeche Mode’s Memento Mori Tour brings them to the United Center in Chicago on November 13. They also have concerts scheduled in Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, and other cities.
Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO, the indie musician’s Electric Light Orchestra tribute album, comes out on November 17 in CD, vinyl, cassette, and digital formats.
Push Puppets have a show at Hey Nonny in Arlington Heights on November 17 in support of their latest, and impressive album Allegory Grey.
Shiiine On Weekender 2023, which is being billed as “An Indoor 3 Day Festival With Accommodation Included,” will be held November 17 through 19 at the Butlin’s Minehead Arena in Somerset, England. Scheduled acts include The Wonder Stuff; Inspiral Carpets; The Primitives; Martin McAloon Of Prefab Sprout; Miki Berenyi Trio; and Stereo MC’s.
Liz Phair will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of her groundbreaking Exile In Guyville by performing the entire album on November 18 at the Chicago Theatre.
The Randolph Holiday Market, featuring over 125 vendors, will take place at 1341 W. Randolph Street in Chicago on November 18 and 19.
The Unswept band will bring its catchy and clever tunes to the Gallery Cabaret on Chicago’s north side on November 18.
The Darker Waves festival takes place on November 18 in Huntington Beach, California. The lineup features several acts that launched successful careers in the 1980s and have maintained them over the decades. New Order, The B-52’s, Tears For Fears, X, The English Beat, Devo, Soft Cell, The Psychedelic Furs, Echo And The Bunnymen, OMD, and The Human League will be performing, along with other acts.
The iBAM Irish Books and Music festival, an annual event that honors “the Best in Irish Heritage and Culture,” will be held at the Irish American Heritage Center on Chicago’s north side on November 18 and 19.
The Goodman Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol opens on November 18, and will run through December 31.
The monthly Beatles Brunch With Phil Angotti And Friends takes place at noon on November 19 at City Winery Chicago.
Nick Lowe has a concert on November 20 at the Old Town School Of Folk Music, as well as a gig with Rami Gabriel on November 21 show with at SPACE in Evanston.
The long Thanksgiving weekend kicks off on November 22 in America. Stay safe while celebrating, and be kind to all the hard-working retail and restaurant/venue employees you encounter.
Noted blues singer-guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks will perform at City Winery Chicago on November 22.
The Des Plaines Theatre in downtown Des Plaines will present The Last Waltz: Tribute To The Band on November 24.
The annual Black Friday Record Store Day takes place on November 24. Check the website for the list of limited-edition vinyl treasures that will be available.
The BoDeans will kick off a four-night run at Chicago City Winery on November 23.
The Smithereens, with guest lead vocalist Robin Wilson from The Gin Blossoms, will perform at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
