Hot Stove Cool Music Returns


The Chicago version of Hot Stove Cool Music, a yearly entertainment and charity event staged by The Foundation To Be Named Later, returns tomorrow night at the iconic Metro venue. Created by Theo and Paul Epstein, the Foundation’s mission statement proclaims, “Channeling our communities’ shared passion for music, baseball and service to create opportunity and a future of possibility for young people and families in Chicago and Boston.” The Boston version was held earlier this year. In addition to a World Series Championship for the Cubs, Hot Stove Cool Music is another memorable treat for our town from Theo Epstein.

Blues great Mavis Staples will headline this year’s event. Other performers scheduled include Juliana Hatfield; Ted Leo; Scott Lucas from Local H; Kay Hanley; baseball star/guitarist Bernie Williams; Gail Greenwood with broadcaster Peter Gammons; Will Dailey; Matt Spiegel; the Chicago and Boston Hot Stove All Stars; Red Sox organist Josh Kantor; and the Chicago Children’s Choir. WXRT air personality Lin Brehmer will once again serve as MC, along with Joel Murray. 100% of the proceeds will go to The Foundation To Be Named Later College Scholarships.


It will also be a special night for Freda Love Smith, whose extensive career in alternative rock included drumming with the Chicago-based Sunshine Boys for the past few years. Her final live performance will be a special reunion at Hot Stove, Cool Music. “I'll end my career the way I started it,” she stated in a social media post. “Drumming (on a couple songs) with my amazing rock sister, Juliana Hatfield.” Love Smith and Hatfield started as members of the pioneering indie trio Blake Babies (along with John Strohm) in 1986. and later formed Some Girls with Heidi Lynne Gluck.


Metro is located just down the street from Wrigley Field, at 3730 N. Clark Street. The doors open at 7:00 pm.
