Weekend Reminders on Thursday posts focus on events that were previously mentioned on Broken Hearted Toy, and are taking place during the upcoming weekend. Plus, the occasional event taking place this weekend that has just come to my attention, or concert tickets going on sale.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the Robyn Hitchcock Live And Electric - Full Band Show on April 10 at the Athenaeum Center on Chicago’s north side. Hitchcock recently proved to be a fascinating and humorous guest on entertainment writer Mark Caro’s Caropop podcast. The interview is available on Caro's YouTube channel.
The WXRT Live From The XRT Concert Archives series continues tomorrow night at 9:00 pm with an April 11, 1987 Grateful Dead performance at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. The broadcast is a tribute to long-time band member Bob Weir, who left us on January 10. Rock In Paradise, Bob. Live From The XRT Concert Archives can be heard on 93.1FM; 93XRT.com; and the Audacy app.
Depending on when you see this, you could catch the Niko and Eric acoustic show at Montrose Saloon on Chicago’s north side tonight. In addition to running Montrose Saloon, Eric Chial is a member of bands such as The Bon Mots and Decoy Prayer Meeting; plus, he’s been known to sit with musicians who perform at his venue. I’m not familiar with the single-named Niko, but he must be pretty good if the boss is doing a a show with him.
The local 10-piece band Midnight Sun will pay tribute to rhythm and blues icon Marvin Gaye this Sunday and Monday nights at City Winery Chicago. Vocalists Isiah Mitchell and Marqueal Jordan will lead the way as Midnight Sun provides highlights from Gaye’s 50-year career.
Local singer-guitarist Phil Angotti has a solo acoustic show that will likely feature original material tomorrow night at the Emerald Green venue in Hammond, IN. On Sunday, he’ll be joined by The Nash Duo of cellist Christopher Ferrer and violinist Emily Nash for a brunch-time tribute to The Beatles at City Winery Chicago at noon.
Week three of Buddy Guy’s 16-date January residency at his Legends venue kicks off this tonight with Bobby Rush and Showers/Simmons as his special guests. Guy will also have guests for his shows tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday, and he’ll be back with more shows in weeks four and five. Legends is located in the south end of downtown Chicago.
Tickets are now on sale for singer-songwriter Michael McDermott’s March 12, 13 and 14 shows at Hey Nonny in Arlington Heights, IL.
The critically acclaimed (Downbeat magazine, Chicago Reader) Joe Policastro Trio will likely showcase songs from their recently released Mending Wall album at Caffè Vivace in Cincinnati, OH this Saturday. Bass player Policastro—along with guitarist Dave Miller and drummer Mikel Avery—is known for adding adventurous touches to traditional jazz music.
Desiree Burcum and Frank Carr of the Chicago-based Famous In The Future comedy group (I was once a member) have changed the name of their alt-rock side project from The Rut to The Lovely Rut. The band has a gig coming up at Phyllis’ Musical Inn tomorrow night, so you can judge their appearance for yourself. They’ll be joined by local bands Boiaderio and Gunnelpumpers, who will likely be attractive as well. Phyllis’ Musical Inn is located at 1800 W. Division on Chicago’s near north side.
