Thursday posts focus on events that were previously mentioned on Broken Hearted Toy, and are taking place during the upcoming weekend. Plus, the occasional event taking place this weekend that has just come to my attention, or concert tickets going on sale.
On behalf of the city of Chicago, here’s a Broken Hearted Toy welcome to Jack White, who’s performing tonight and tomorrow at the Salt Shed. Both dates, as well as most of the stops on his current No Name Tour, have long been sold out. WXRT has been rocking its listeners with steady airplay of “That’s How I’m Feeling” and “Archbishop Harold Holmes,” so hopefully those songs are on his setlist. Other highlights on his recent No Name album include “What’s The Rumpus?” and “Morning at Midnight.”
Theo Epstein and Peter Gammons’ annual Hot Stove Cool Music is set for this Saturday at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. The event will feature Cheap Trick; Greg Hawkes and Eddie Japan performing songs by The Cars; and the Hot Stove All-Stars (Peter Gammons, Theo Epstein, Bill Janovitz, Kay Hanley, Will Dailey, and MLB Legends). 100% of the proceeds will go to the Foundation To Be Named Later Gammons College Scholarships fund.
Vocalist-guitarist Michael Steven Cohen will perform songs from the Great American Songbook this Friday at Tuscan Market in Arlington Heights; and then at Chicago Prime Italian in Schaumburg on Saturday. Cohen performs at these two places on a regular basis, so they must think he's pretty good.
Chicago music scene veteran vocalist-guitarist Nicholas Tremulis, backed by the band The Prodigals, has a show this Saturday at City Winery Chicago.
Chicago power pop musician Dolph Chaney has a solo gig this Saturday afternoon at Bernstein’s NY Deli in Homewood, IL. He’ll perform from noon to 2:00 pm.
Sons Of The Silent Age, Chicago’s well-regarded David Bowie tribute band, has a benefit concert for a close friend of theirs this Sunday at Madame Zuzu’s in Highland Park. The music starts at 7:00 pm.
Chicago-based band whitewolfsonicprincess, whose enchanting approach to alt rock on their albums earned them a song on a recent compilation released by the U.K.-based Fruits De Mer Records, will share a bill with singer-songwriter Hannah Frank at Cary’s Lounge this Sunday. The show will run from 4:00 to 7:00 pm; Cary’s Lounge is located at 2251 W. Devon on the far north side.
Chicago band Baby No Name has a record release event for its second effort Feral this Sunday at Jarvis Square Pottery on the city’s far north side. The group’s website describes Feral as “surprisingly bad ass, departing wholly from 2021’s exquisitely personal EP, Come Close.” Susan Abelson and Victor Sanders will also perform that night.
Record Store Day 2025 arrives this Saturday. The entire list of limited-edition vinyl offerings is available on the official website, and as always, there’s something for fans of just about every genre and era. Here’s a sampling of the recording artists involved: Tori Amos; The B-52’s; Chet Baker; Count Basie And His Orchestra; Belly; The Blasters; Blur; David Bowie; Alex Chilton; Patsy Cline; Ry Cooder; Elvis Costello; Cowboy Junkies; The Cure; Cypress Hill; De La Soul; Jackie DsShannon; The Doors; Duran Duran; Bill Evans; Neil Finn; Liam Finn; Fleetwood Mac; Peter Gabriel; Liam Gallagher; Jerry Garcia Band; David Gilmour; Grateful Dead; Emmylou Harris; George Harrison/Beck; George Harrison; Peter Holsapple; John Lee Hooker; Freddie Hubbard; Ice T; Mahalia Jackson; The Jayhawks; Jethro Tull; Elton John; Mark Knopfler; John Legend; The Lemonheads; Little Richard; Harvey Mandel; Johnny Marr; Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets; The Meters; Charles Mingus; Joni Mitchell; Thelonious Monk; Motörhead; Alison Moyet; Nektar; The O’Jays; Dolores O’Riordan; Oasis; Graham Parker and The Figgs; Alan Parsons Project; Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill; Pixies; Prince and the New Power Generation; Rain Parade; Queen; Lou Reed; The Replacements; The Rolling Stones; Todd Rundgren; Gil Scott-Heron; Sharika; Sly and the Family Stone; Soul Asylum; Sun Ra; Sweet; Taylor Swift; T. Rex; Talking Heads; Thin Lizzy; 13th Floor Elevators; Carla Thomas; Thompson Twins; Throwing Muses; Peter Tosh; Eddie Vedder; Tom Waits; Wall Of Voodoo; Willie Dixon; Ronnie Wood; Yes; and Warren Zevon. There are tons more I didn’t mention, as well as a number of interesting various artists compilations. Best of luck to all in snagging the record(s) they crave.
