August, Rock She Must


There’s still at least another month to enjoy summer events. I’m hoping to go into more details on all of the following in the coming weeks, and there are sure to be more events that pop up during that time. Be sure to check social media and official websites for your favorite performers and venues so you don’t miss anything.

The Millennium Park Summer Film Series will feature the Summer Of Soul (. . . Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) concert film on August 1.


Lollapalooza kicks off on August 3 and runs through August 6 in Grant Park in Chicago. The massive roster of performers includes Billie Eilish; Kendrick Lamar; Red Hot Chili Peppers; and Lana Del Rey. 


Chicago indie label Pravda Records has a showcase on August 4 at FitzGerald’s in Berwyn that will feature The Handcuffs; Ivan Julian of Richard Hell And The Voidoids fame with Nicholas Tremulis; and Brian Krumm and His Barfly Friends.


International Pop Overthrow, the traveling showcase of power pop and indie rock, returns to its birthplace on August 4 for a nine-day run at the Redwood Bar in Los Angeles.


The Famous In The Future comedy group’s YippieFest returns on the weekend of August 4 – 6, at PrideArtsChicago. The annual three-day celebration of counter-culture entertainment is modeled after the late Mary-Arrchie Theatre’s long-running Abbie Hoffman Died For Our Sins Festival.


Pictures Of You: A Compilation Of Covers Of Songs By The Cure, a new multi-act tribute album from the UK record label and culture webzine God Is In The TV, will be available to download on Bandcamp August 4.


The Dandy Warhols will perform at Metro in Chicago on August 9.


The Tom Petty: Among The Wildflowers exhibit continues its six-month run at the Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention in Gainesville, FL. It offers a 700 square foot collection of artifacts, including some from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and other exclusive memorabilia.


Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band will return to Wrigley Field in Chicago on August 9.


FAN EXPO CHICAGO will be held at the Donald Stephens Center in Rosemont, IL on August 10 through through 13. Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Susan Sarandon, Giancarlo Esposito, Henry Winkler, Barry Bostwick, and Katee Sackhoff are among the many celebrity guests.


Fest For Beatles Fans - Chicago, a mix of live music, celebrity guests, art, photography, contests, and merchandise, returns to the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont on the weekend of August 11 – 13. WXRT radio personality Terri Hemmert will once again serve as Master Of Ceremonies, and some of Chicago’s best local acts will be performing on The Apple Jam Stage and Main Stage.


The State Of Sound exhibit, a pop-up version of the award-winning exhibition that was held at the Abraham Lincoln Museum in Springfield, continues its run at Navy Pier through Aug. 27. The exhibit celebrates Illinois-based stars such as Muddy Waters; Material Issue; Earth, Wind & Fire; Chicago; Chance the Rapper; Wilco; Shoes; and Cheap Trick.


The Printer’s Row Art Fest returns for its fifth year in the south end area of downtown Chicago on the weekend of August 12 and 13. 90 juried artists and artisans will be showcasing their work.


The riverfront venues The Northman Riverwalk Beer And Cider Garden (233 E. Riverwalk) and Tiny Tapp (55 W. Riverwalk) in downtown Chicago, offer late afternoon and early evening live music featuring some of the city’s best bands throughout this month.


Smoking Popes will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their impressive debut Get Fired with a special vinyl reissue to be released on August 17.


Chicago radio station WXRT will honor the life and laughs of everyone’s best friend in the whole world with A Celebration Of Lin Brehmer at Metro on August 19. XRT DJs Terri Hemmert, Marty Lennartz, Annalisa, Ryan Arnold, Johnny Mars, and Frank E. Lee will serves as hosts;  Bob Mould, Los Lobos, Jon Langford, Kelly Hogan and Michael McDermot will be performing.


The Chicago Air And Water Show will be held along North Avenue Beach on the weekend of August 19 and 20.


The Ugly Things fanzine will celebrate four decades of supporting indie music with a 40th Anniversary Weekender at Casbah and Whistle Stop venues in San Diego on August 25 and 26.


The pioneering L.A. punk band X, featuring all four original members, will perform on August 27 and 28 at The Old Town School Of Folk Music in Chicago.


Los Straitjackets will be the main attraction when the Third Coast Surf Fest is held at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine on August 26. There will also be six local bands, including OUTRONAUT and Roger That.


The Millennium Park Summer Film Series will feature the Academy Award Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once on August 29.


Artists For Wildlife Conservation will hold a fundraiser featuring the work of rock and roll photographer Henry Diltz at the City Winery in Boston on August 30. The event offers a meet-and-greet with Diltz, who will be selling signed prints of his work. Proceeds will go toward elephant conservation in the Amboseli National Park in Kenya.
