Slumgullion is late this week due to my making rather merry with my extended family yesterday. We always celebrate Thanksgiving on the day after since it lets everyone stay longer. Except last year, when we didn’t get together at all. Great seeing everyone again.

Out Of Time: The Material Issue Story will be screened at Lincoln Hall on Chicago’s north side this coming Thursday, December 2. The Balin Schneider directed documentary recently went over quite well at The Parkway Theater in Minneapolis, MN, from what I see on Facebook posts. The Lincoln Hall event will also feature a performance by the current lineup of Material Issue. The band’s terrific debut effort, International Pop Overthrow, was released 30 years ago.

The 27th Annual Black Harvest Film Festival continues its run at the Gene Siskel Film Center on State Street in downtown Chicago through next Thursday. December 2.

Over The Rhine will bring its annual Christmas Tour to The Old Town School Of Folk Music on December 5. The critically acclaimed alt rock/Americana band, led by Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, will offer a mix of traditional holiday songs and original material. The music starts at 7:00 pm.

Annie Leibovitz, whose photos of rock stars and celebrities have been featured in Rolling Stone and other publications for years, will give a presentation titled On Photography And Fashion at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance on December 7. It’s part of the 2021 Chicago Humanities Festival.

 

It couldn’t be a festive season without the annual Chris & Heather’s Country Calendar Show at FitzGerald’s in Berwyn. This year’s edition falls on December 4. It’s a double win since attendees can enjoy homespun music as well as the opportunity to buy a calendar featuring Heather McAdams’ fun drawing of rock and country stars.

She And Him, AKA Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, will be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their holiday album A Very She And Him Christmas at The Chicago Theatre on December 7.

Tonight, we’re going to party like it’s 2022. Tickets are now on sale for a pair of Tributosaurus shows celebrating the music of Prince at Theater On The Lake. The first is on New Year’s Eve, and the second will be on January 1. Tributosuarus, one of Chicago’s best-known tribute bands, promised on a Facebook they’ll “get funky, soulful, joyful, and sexy as we wanna be.” 

Tickets are also available for Josh Caterer Trio and Sunshine Boys at SPACE in Evanston on December 16; Flat Five at FitzGerald’s on January 21; Janis Ian at Old Town School Of Folk Music on May 14; Chris Isaak at Genesee Theatre on December 11; Local H at Beat Kitchen December 29 through 31; Low at Metro on February 16; Modern English at SPACE on July 2; Sheila E. and the E-Train at City Winery on February 5 and 6; Southern Culture On The Skids at FitzGerald’s on October 12; and Tears For Fears and Garbage at Hollywood Casino on June 16.

I’ve been subscribing to it for a while, and it’s available in newspaper boxes and at venues in downtown and Chicago’s north side. I just got a packet of Reader buttons in the mail today that I had ordered from the publication’s website.

The Irish Community Services organization is holding a Jolly Tots, a free event featuring games, crafts, and songs for kids aged six and under at the Irish American Heritage Center from noon to 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 11.

 

Chicago-based indie rock band whitewolfsonicprincess will hold its annual Toys For Tots benefit on December 10 at the La Principal Mexican Restaurant at 700 Main St. in Evanston. The six-hour event will feature 12 sets by local performers, including Gemini; Dark Room Men; Lady Stardust; The Rut; WWSP; and The Telepaths.

The Empty Pockets band have a performance titled An Americana Holiday coming up at City Winery Chicago on December 15; and Michael McDermott will bring Mischief And Mistletoe to that same venue December 20 through 23.
