Saturday Slumgullion

Black Friday Record Store Day comes next week, and the list of this year’s limited-edition vinyl treasures can be found on the official RSD website. As usual, there’s something to please fans of just about every genre. Releases that caught my eye include the 2-LP set The Byrds/Buffalo Springfield: Live at the Monterey International Pop Festival and copy/paste, a collection of cover versions by Garbage. Other acts on the 2024 RSD Black Friday list include Allman Brothers Band; The Blasters; Sam Cooke; Cypress Hill; The Doors; Echo And The Bunnymen; Billie Eilish; The English Beat; Jerry Garcia; Grateful Dead; Herbie Hancock; Jimi Hendrix; B.B. King; Steve Martin; Joni Mitchell; Stevie Nicks; Buck Owens; Pearl Jam; Ramones; The Rolling Stones; Santana; Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson; T-Rex; Tangerine Dream; U2; Van Halen; War; and Yes.

Ratboys, the Chicago-based indie rock band whose 2023 album The Window made quite an impression, will wrap up a busy fall tour with a November 29 show in their hometown at Thalia Hall. Ducks Ltd., another local act with an impressive album (Harm's Way), will also be on hand. Ratboys and Ducks Ltd. have collaborated on a few songs in the studio. There’s a low ticket alert for this show.

Jack White will start his massive 2025 Canada/USA/Japan No Name Tour on February 6 in Toronto, and he’ll have dates at The Salt Shed in Chicago on April 10 and 11. As noted on his Facebook page today, there was a long line of fans outside his Third Man Records store in Nashville yesterday hoping to buy the limited edition of his “That’s How I’m Feeling”/“You Got Me Searching” tri-color 7-inch single. A black vinyl version is available from his website and the Third Man Records website.

Pravda Records has a 40th Anniversary Showcase and Whiskey Rye Release event coming up on December 7 at the Judson & Moore venue. Pravda label mates Steve Dawson and The Handcuffs will share a bill that kicks off at 8:00 pm. Judson & Moore is located at 3057 N. Rockwell in Chicago.

The members of Queen have released a remixed, remastered and expanded version of their 1973 debut Queen I. Apparently, they were not amused by how it was produced back in the day. Now it’s a 6-CD+1LP box set with 63 tracks and 43 brand new mixes.

Congratulations to The Spindles on being chosen as the first act to perform at the Des Plaines Theatre’s new Indie Rock Night series. That show will take place on December 17. The Arcada in St. Charles, IL will also have Indie Rock nights.

Sons Of The Silent Age, Chicago’s impressive David Bowie tribute band, has a Celebrating 50 Years Of David Bowie’s Young Americans And More show coming to Metro on January 11, 2025. Critically acclaimed actor Michael Shannon, who frequently shares a bill with Sons Of The Silent Age, will perform that night as John Lennon. Tickets are now on sale. Metro is located at 3730 N. Clark Street.

Vocalist Kate Fagan’s long career on the Chicago alt rock scene started with BB Spin although she’s better known for fronting the ska band Heavy Manners. She also recorded the popular single “I Don’t Wanna Be Too Cool.” She’s still active these days, as demonstrated by her latest release “2 Good 2 B True.” Co-written by Fagan and guitarist Jeremy Joyce, the song sets reflections on a romance gone sour to an engaging, mid-tempo arrangement.

Roses For The Roches: A Tribute to Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy Roche, featuring critically acclaimed vocalists Nora O’Connor, Sima Cunningham, and Kelly Hogan will take place on November 26 at Old Town School Of Folk Music on Chicago’s north side. Alex Grelle, a multi-faceted entertainer, will serve as the evening’s host.

Legendary rhythm and blues vocalist Mavis Staples has an 85th Hometown Birthday Celebration coming up on December 6 at The Auditorium Theatre in downtown Chicago. That’s five months after her actual 85th birthday, but it’s not likely anyone will complain. The event is part of the 93XRT Fall Jam Series, and will feature special guest sets by Jackson Browne and Margo Price.

The Famous In The Future comedy group will present A Judy Christmas on the weekend of December 20 – 22 at The Den Theatre in Chicago.
