Planning Your Record Store Day

The traditional Record Store Day returned in 2022 after two years of splintered RSD Drops offered during the pandemic. The back-to-normal list of limited-edition, one-day-only vinyl releases for this Saturday’s event is available on the official website. As always, RSD offers an ambitious mix of rereleases and never-before-available items in pretty much every genre; rock, soul, country, hip hop, blues, classical, and jazz. Here are a few tips if you’re considering Record Store Day for the first time or if it’s been a while and you’ve forgotten some of the rules.

All the stores I’ve been to for RSD keep the releases behind the counter, so it’s a good idea to browse the online list and jot your choices on a piece of paper. Depending on how a particular store’s employees feel, they’ll either ask you to read your list out loud or hand it over to them. If there’s something you desperately want, your best option is to arrive at least a half hour before the store opens and get in line. Even then, there’s a chance the record you want has already been sold or wasn’t shipped to that store, so have a few alternatives in mind. Under no circumstances should you stand at the counter and dither.

A trip through the eclectic Record Store Day list reveals releases such as Blue Room: The 1979 Vara Studio Sessions In Holland by Chet Baker; Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player by Elton John; Blues Is King by B.B. King; Live In Anvers by Alex Chilton; Live And Cookin’ At Alice’s Revisted by Howlin Wolf; Rockin’ And Rollin’ by T. Rex; Live And Dangerous: Boston 1976 by Peter Tosh; Apartment Life Demos by Ivy; Two Hearts Beat As One/Sunday Bloody Sunday War And Surrender Mixes by U2; The Legendary Demos by Carole King; Work In Progress by The Specials; Wake Up And Smell The Coffee by The Cranberries; All Directions by The Temptations; The Dub Battle by Sly And Robbie Vs Roots Radics; Gimme Some Truth by John Lennon; Little Broken Hearts: Live At Allaire Studios by Norah Jones; Up Your Alley by Joan Jett And The Blackhearts; Red Rose Speedway by Paul McCartney; A Hot Summer Night (40th Anniversary Edition) by Donna Summer; Incense And Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock; I Got What It Takes by Koko Taylor; Bella Donna Live 1981 by Stevie Nicks; Best Of The Rest: Rare And Unreleased Recordings by Phil Ochs; The Monument Singles Collection 1964 – 1968 by Dolly Parton; Give Way by Pearl Jam; Burning Love - The RCA Rehearsals by Elvis Presley; Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones; All In For The Gambler: All-Star Concert Celebration by Kenny Rogers; and Stop And Smell The Roses by Ringo Starr.

I’ve been working on my list for a while now, but I usually end up making a few last-minute choices. Best of luck to all those taking part in the year’s Record Store Day adventure.
