Unplugged Duo. Phil Angotti and Ted Ansani will perform two acoustic sets of cover versions and original tunes tonight at the Temple Bar. The musicians previously performed together when Angotti joined Material Issue members Ansani and drummer Mike Zelenko on a series of Material re-Issue gigs last year. The Temple Bar is located at 3001 N. Ashland in Chicago. Showtime tonight is 9:00 PM.

Paperback Writers. Three regulars from my writers group have recently published Young Adult novels. Cherie Colyer will host the physical launch (the virtual launch was about a month ago) for her paranormal tale Embrace, tomorrow from 10:00 AM to noon. I did an interview with Colyer for the Sunday Morning Coffee With Jeff Internet show last Halloween. The location for the Embrace launch is the Starbucks at 181 Barrington Road in Schaumburg. Embrace is also available online from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Omnific Publishing.

My interview with Susan Kaye Quinn about her paranormal Young Adult novel Open Minds should appear on SMCWJ either this Sunday or the next. Open Minds recently made it into Amazon’s Top 100 List of Science Fiction books.

And I’m planning to interview Marian Manseau Cheatham in the near future about her historical novel Merely Dee. The book is based on Chicago’s tragic Eastland Disaster in 1915 and follows the emotional struggles of a young survivor who lost co-workers and her best friend to the incident. Merely Dee is available at the iUniverse website.

I Want You To Want To Tune In. WXRT is airing a vintage Cheap Trick concert from 1977 this Sunday night at 8:00 PM. Fans who are not in the Chicago area can stream the show via the station’s website.

Cool Minds Think Alike. On the most recent edition of his syndicated radio show, Underground Garage, Little Steven Van Zandt chose “I Woke Up” by the Milwaukee-based power pop band Trolley as his Coolest Song Of The Week. Earlier this month, I picked Trolley’s Things That Shine And Glow as one of my Top 10 Releases of 2011.

Super Opportunity. Crawpuppies have moved into first place among the Indiana-based artists competing for a chance to join Jane’s Addiction and The Roots at Rolling Stone’s Rock And Roll Fan Tailgate event on February 5th in Indianapolis. Fans can vote for their choice at the Rolling Stone Volkswagen Super Band website. Crawpuppies released the impressive CD, World’s Much Bigger last year.

Quid Prose. The vibrantly painted Cirque du Soleil promotional bus pulled up outside the Whole Foods store in Palatine yesterday afternoon to help spread the word about its upcoming Quidam performances at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates from Febraury 8th - 12th. Workers set up big screen TV’s in the store’s cafe to show a behind-the-scenes video and handed out free packs of popcorn.

Visitors were able to fill out tickets for a chance to win free admission, but there was no sign of the green screen for taking Quidam-related photos, as mentioned in a press release. One of the workers explained that the winter bus events have to be scaled down due to weather conditions. The bus will be at the Whole Foods in Schaumburg (750 Martingale Rd.) this coming Sunday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Post Puerto Man. Christa Meyer, formerly half of the critically acclaimed Chicago duo Puerto Muerto, has just released a solo effort under the moniker Man Is Man. Writer Jessica Hopper recently reported in the Chicago Tribune that Smoking Popes guitarist Eli Caterer is one of the backing musicians on Meyer’s Those Birds Will Eat Us CD.

Two Doctors In The News. Congratulations to current Doctor Who star Matt Smith on his best Male Drama Performance honor at Britain’s 2012 National Television Awards. Smith’s co-star Karen Gillan was chosen as best Female Drama Performance for her role as Amy Pond. Meanwhile, David Tennant, who portrayed the galaxy-trotting time lord just prior to Smith is starring in the new romantic comedy, The Decoy Bride.

Sick Humor. Seth Rogen’s recent comedy 50/50 was based on the concept of a cancer patient using his illness to meet women. Veteran stand-up comedian Len Austrevich is also taking a comedic angle on cancer, but for the purpose of cheering up kids like his son Miles who have the disease. Austrevich and his son have set up a website so they can amass a collection of 5,000 jokes from contributors around the world. Why? So Miles can get his mind off his painful therapy by having a good laugh.

As reported by Brett Schweinberg on the My Suburban Life website, they've received over 100 entries since the January 1st kickoff. Even some celebrities, like Jay Leno, Amy Poehler, and Will Arnett have joined in. The effect can clearly be seen on the face of Miles Austrevich in a video where he talks about how much he appreciates the efforts of friends, stars, and total strangers to help him feel better.

Len Austrevich recently posted an ad on CraigsList under TV & Radio seeking production help, particularly from writers, editors and webmasters. Those interested in joining the cause can find more information at the Jokes For Miles website.

Metro Calendar Memories

Haymakers, a Chicago area rock club that flourished a few decades ago is throwing a reunion party at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine on February 26th. I never made it to Haymakers, but I’ll be attending the reunion since I am familiar with the bands that are participating, and Durty Nellie’s is just down the street from me. I went through my yellowed copies of Metro Entertainment Calendar, the paper I used to write for back in those days, and found album reviews for three of the bands who will be at the February 26th reunion.

In the December, 1978 issue, I described the self-titled debut from Tantrum, a band fronted by vocalists Pam Bradley, Barb Erber, and Sandy Caulfield as “an impressive collection hard rock commercial melodies.” I cited the three singers' well-crafted harmonies and predicted tracks like “Kidnapped” and “Livin’ My Life Without You,” could be hit singles.

Volume One, Issue Two of Metro Calendar came out in September, 1977. Here’s what I wrote about Pezband’s self-titled first effort: “Two songs in particular, ‘Please Be Somewhere Tonight’ and ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside,’ show a Beatles like energy and have strong chart potential.” I noted that chief songwriter/lead vocalist Mimi Betinis had successfully reproduced the British Invasion sound, and compared his angst-ridden “When I’m Down” to vintage Pete Townshend.

In April, 1978, I followed up an earlier cover story on The Hounds with a review of their debut album, Unleashed. The record included the band’s FM radio classic “Drugland Weekend,” as well as solid rock songs like “Bite The Dog” and “Alleys Of Love” The swaggering “Bad Blood Between Us” was a perfect outlet for lead vocalist John Hunter’s aggressive vocal style.

45 RPM Memories: Gary Jones - “Friction”/”Underground”

Back in 1980, “Friction” was the second single released by the Chicago band Gary Jones. Both songs were credited to the writing team of lead singer Tom Masters and guitarist Ty Penn. There was no Gary Jones in the band; it was just one of those fictional names like Jethro Tull. The band had earlier put out the original tune “Science Fiction” backed by a cover of David Bowie’s “What In The World,” and as far as I know, that was the extent of the band’s recording output. Which is unfortunate.

“Friction” is a classic new wave blend of energetic guitars and keyboards with a male-female vocal dynamic going on between Masters and vocalist Karen Pocius. They trade off and on singing lead and combine on lines like, “A brand new neighborhood.” The lyrics seem to be about finding the right apartment. “The only thing I really need is territory guaranteed,” Masters sings.

The dramatic give and take between Masters and Pocius was one of the highlights of the band’s live shows. Back when I lived on Chicago’s southwest side, I treasured the few new wave and punk bands like Gary Jones, Bohemia, and B.B. Spin that would descend from the hipper regions up north and perform at the Haywires rock club. The theatrical edge Gary Jones brought to catchy songs like “Cameo” made the band even more intriguing.

The B-side of "Friction, “Underground” features Masters alone on vocals, and he sort of drifts in after an ominous drums and keyboards intro. Although he mentions a heatwave, the song evokes more of a nocturnal ambience as it slowly grooves to a marching beat provided by drummer John Davies. I always fantasize that if I ever publish my rock and roll novel and it’s turned into a movie, this is the song that will play over the opening credits.

CD Review: The Luck Of Eden Hall - Butterfly Revolutions Vol. 2

The Luck Of Eden Hall didn’t keep its followers waiting long for the second half of its ambitious Butterfly Revolutions project. ‘Followers’ is the operative word here as the veteran Chicago band travels through imaginative landscapes and dabbles in transcendental philosophy. It’s an album where lead vocalist-guitarist Gregory Curvey asks, “How does it feel to be a drop in the ocean?” and answers his own question with, “You already know.”

The 12 tracks are set to a variety of psychedelic and prog rock arrangements. The acoustic “North Hampton Woods,” with its exquisite melody and evocative vocals, just might be the most enchanting moment on Vol. 2, although The Luck Of Eden Hall also succeeds with the hard-hitting “Realization Loop” and “Complicated Mind.” Titles like “Whither Fare Thou Be” and “Henrietta Lacks A Smile” promise a trip back to the baroque pop of the early Bee Gees, and the songs certainly deliver. The epic “A Drop In The Ocean” serves as an appropriate coda to the Butterfly Revolutions saga.

CD Review: The Creeping Ivies - Rock N Roll Party

I’m not sure if The Creeping Ivies take their name from Cramps guitarist Poison Ivy but they do cite The Cramps as a major influence. Along with The Ramones, Link Wray, and Bo Diddley. The coed Scottish duo has been performing since 2010, melding a sound that feels vintage and cutting edge at the same time. Garage rock fans in the U.S. might be familiar with their wailing song, “Shake It Up,” which appeared on the 2011 various artists compilation You Got Your Punk In My Garage.

Singer-guitarist Becca Bomb’s vocals are more of a howl amidst the sparse arrangements on The Creeping Ivies’ debut EP, Rock N Roll Party. The first song, “Buggin’ Around,” opens with her fuzzed out strumming before Duncan Destruction jumps in with some hard-hitting drums. The live-performance-in-a-bar vibe continues on the seductive “Head To Tail,” with Bomb’s bravado vocals once again taking center stage. The rambunctious title track is a bit short at just under two minutes, but it’s still an irresistible invitation to join these two charismatic musicians for a good time. The Creeping Ivies would likely have to add some nuances to their bare-bones approach in order to keep an entire CD interesting, but they’re off to an intriguing start.

Lucky Butterflies. The Luck Of Eden Hall has a CD release party for the massively psychedelic Butterfly Revolutions Volume 2 (which I'll be reviewing here soon) tonight at the Abbey Pub on Chicago’s northwest side.

Our Best Friend In The Whole World. Congratulations to Lin Brehmer on 20 years of being WXRT’s morning man. During that time, he has rarely indulged in the cheap shots and low humor too often found on FM rock stations in that time slot. His comments between songs, repartee with news anchor Mary Dixon, and twice weekly Lin’s Bin segments rely instead on wit and a vast knowledge of pop culture. This approach has won over listeners, and though he jokes he only has two of them, there are plenty more and they’re fiercely loyal. WXRT will honor Brehmer with an special celebration that can be streamed from the station’s website tomorrow, Saturday, January 21st, from noon until 2:00 PM.

Gabba Gabba Happy Birthday. Hired Goons will bring their Ramones style energy and off-the-wall humor to Mt. Prospect tomorrow night for a gig at Ye Olde Town Inn. It’s a birthday bash for some of the band’s friends. The show starts at 7:00 PM.

Walk Like A Guy Who’s Played With The Egyptians. Bangles vocalist-guitarist Susanna Hoffs, who recently celebrated her 19th birthday, will be part of a double bill with Robyn Hitchcock at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, CA tomorrow night.

Magic Bus. There’s a circus coming to town, and it’s not one that harms animals. The critically-acclaimed Cirque Du Soleil is sending a bus to Whole Foods stores in the Chicago area to promote its Quidam show. Customers will be able to view behind the scenes videos; have Quidam related photos taken using green screen technology, and receive Quidam related items.

There will also be chances to win tickets to see Quidam. The Cirque Du Soleil bus will visit Whole Foods stores in Wheaton (151 Rice Lake Square) on Monday January 23rd from 3-5pm; Naperville (2607 West 75th St.) on Wednesday January 25th from 11am-1pm; Palatine (1331 North Rand Rd.) on Thursday January 26th from 3-5pm; and Schaumburg (750 Martingale Rd.) Sunday January 29th from 11am-2pm.

Growing Up Fab. Stockwood, the Beatles tribute band that started as tykes playing at The Fest For Beatles Fans - Chicago a few years back, are now young lads. They’ll be doing a free show at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine on Saturday, February 11th. Doors open at 6:00 PM.

Watch Out! Australia’s perennially fun power pop band, The Hoodoo Gurus are celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a remodeled website, a CD called Gold Watch: 20 Golden Greats, and some major concert events. Signed copies of the greatest hits collection are available for pre-order at JB Hi-Fi and will include an enhanced version of “Use-By-Date,” a song that was previously only available as a download. So far, Dig It Up! - The Hoodoo Gurus Invitational tour, which will find them performing with some of their favorite bands, is limited to Australia. It would be great to see them back to the States.

Sounds Sexy. Recent Los Angeles transplants The Violet Lights are set to release their debut EP Sex & Sound in April, and are making the title track available as a free download on their website. That song, along with the other four tracks, has an atmospheric quality featuring adventurous vocals from singer-guitarist Joel Nass and keyboards-singer Amber Garvey. The Violet Lights’ extensive North American tour brings them to Reggie’s in Chicago on February 13th.

Thanksgiving Leftovers. Sopro has just posted a photo gallery from its 2011 Thanksgiving Blues Revue. Funny, Sopro founder Bud Monaco doesn’t look any older from the days when I used to see him at the Harlows/Pips/Haywire club back in the 1980s. Sopro has an Easter Blues Revue coming up on April 7th at Phil McCracken’s Night Club in Worth, Illinois.

You'll Like This. The melodic rock trio This Is This has a 7:30 PM gig next Saturday night at the Newport Coffee House in Bannockburn.

Some Time In New York City. Fest For Beatles Fans has announced its guest list for the New York convention, which runs March 22nd -25th at the NJ Crowne Plaza Meadowlands Hote; Secaucus in New Jersey. The celebrities on hand will be Peter Asher, Micky Dolenz, original Wings members Henry McCullough and Denny Seiwell, Mark Hudson, and the Beatles cover band, Liverpool.

On A Sad Note. Sherman Shoemaker, an actor who was extensively involved in the Chicago theatre scene, has passed away. There will be a memorial celebration of his life and many accomplishments next Saturday, January 28th, at the Dolce Casa Cafe on north Damen Avenue in Chicago.

Love Those New Shoes. When Mary E. Donnelly says she’s excited about an upcoming CD from Shoes, I’m inclined to believe her. She’s a regular contributor to the Power Pop blog, and is finishing up Boys Don't Lie: A History Of Shoes, a book about the Zion, IL power pop band. She has interviewed its members, and in her January 16th post, Donnelly described hearing demo mixes for the entire new CD. She predicts Shoes fans are going to be extremely happy.

Sound & Vision. The Postelles have announced upcoming gigs in March for Allston, MA, Washington, DC, and Atlanta GA. They’ve made a video for the song, “Sound The Alarms” that features footage from their tour.

Nerds Rule. Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Big Bang Theory on airing its 100th episode yesterday. Who would have thought they could keep finding humor in the lives of four science nerds for this long.

CD Review: Go Time! - Boneshaker

No one is ever gonna come away from a Go Time! album wondering what a guitar sounds like. As on its previous two efforts, the Chicago-based quartet features the instrument up front on a series of melodic songs. It’s still a challenge trying to slap a label on Go Time! due to the variety of approaches taken on Boneshaker, but that doesn’t make the CD any less enjoyable.

The more jazz-oriented “Terminally Askew” is the only track where Scott Niekelski and Paul Schmidt’s guitars are understated, and “Better Days” is mostly acoustic. Otherwise, their axes reign, from the hard rock of the expansive “Don’t Hold Back” to the R.E.M. influenced jangle of “April Fool.” “Residue,” a song about fading memories, and “Reluctant Hero,” a satiric look at the role men play in society, also stand out on this eclectic collection.

CD Review: The Oblivious - America

A Chicago native and veteran of the L.A. and London music scenes, Holly Vincent hasn’t forgotten the irresistible melodies that made Holly & The Italians stand out amidst the original class of new wave bands. Now leading The Oblivious, she has recorded a debut that’s sure to draw new fans, and maybe send them scrambling to find her older material. Vincent’s energetic vocals are well-suited to the theme of social consciousness that runs throughout America.

The epic “Homeless” brims with an anger and frustration that can also be found on the ballads “It’s The Sound” and “America (I’m Wasted).” There are a number of guitar-driven treasures, including “Crush,” “DSF,” and “Does Anyone.” The flowery “Witness” is the only weak spot among the 14 tracks, which makes America an impressive comeback for Vincent.

Dot Dash: Punk’s Flame Still Burns

As odd as it may seem, there’s something reassuring about the way Dot Dash approaches punk rock. At a time when the genre has been watered down, commercialized, and co-opted by boy bands, this Washington, DC-based quartet plays the real thing. Not necessarily super fast punk, but the 14 energetic tracks on Dot Dash’s full-length debut, Spark Flame Ember Ash evoke UK bands like The Clash, The Jam, and The Smiths.

Singer-guitarist Terry Banks is a major reason for the similarity. His instantly appealing vocals sound British as he delivers well-crafted lyrics about the ups and downs of relationships. He and fellow guitarist Bill Crandall bring an intensity to melodic songs like “Tragedy/Destiny,” and a touch of 1960s jangle to the otherwise cutting edge “I’m Going Home.” The more whimsical “Alright, Alright” exudes the same charm as The Kooks, as well as their obvious role models, The Kinks.

While Dot Dash has only been together for a little over a year, its individual members have a lot of experience. Banks and bassist Hunter Bennett performed with the band Julie Ocean; Crandall logged time with Modest Proposal; and drummer Danny Ingram came from Swervedriver. Together they create a vintage punk sound on Spark Flame Ember Ash that’s hard to resist.

Looking Back At Looking Back

Earlier this month, I hastily threw together a list of favorite CDs from 2011.

I meant to go back at some point and elaborate on my choices. Plus, I encountered Only In Dreams by Dum Dum Girls after the fact, and felt that it really should be in the Top Ten. Rather than kick a previous honoree out, I now have 11 Top Ten Choices for 2011, which is kind of fitting.

So, once again in no particular order, and with a bit more background information, here is the list:

Dum Dum Girls - Only In Dreams - California-based band updates the 1960s girl group sound with twanging guitars, irresistible melodies, and heartfelt vocals.

The Disciplines - Virgins Of Menace - Second effort from Posies singer-guitarist Ken Stringfellow and the Norwegian band Briskeby is hard-hitting, topical, and melodic.

Bad Examples - Smash Record - The Chicago band’s first effort in several years was a pop masterpiece with clever lyrics and Squeeze-like arrangements.

Starry Saints - Serenade - Atmospheric rock with expansive synthesizers and ethereal but powerful vocals. A nocturnal adventure.

Mimi Betinis - All That Glitters - The singer-guitarist from Pezband delivers an impressive collection of guitar-driven tunes.

Beady Eye - Different Gear - Still Speeding - Former Oasis mates create a striking debut by tapping into British Invasion music. Beatles and Stones indeed.

Phil Angotti - People And Places A thought-provoking and tuneful collection from a Chicago singer-guitarist who had quite a busy year.

Smithereens - 2011 - A great comeback that matches anything the veteran power pop band has done throughout its impressive career.

The Handcuffs - Waiting For The Robot - Third album from the Chicago coed band fronted by Brad Elvis and Chloe F. Orwell. Bits of glam rock and funk add to an already winning formula.

Bangles - Sweetheart Of The Sun Bassist-vocalist Michael Steele is no longer on board, but Susanna Hoffs and the Peterson sisters remain a close-knit trio. Their first CD since the overlooked Doll Revolution is filled with 1960s-flavored arrangements and airtight harmonies.

Trolley - Things That Shine And Glow The latest from this underrated Wisconsin band blends classic 1960s influences and cutting edge rock.

Dolly Varden will be celebrating the re-release of its Mouthful Of Lies CD with a show at Schubas Tavern on January 28th. The critically-acclaimed alt rock/country & western band will be performing all the songs from the 1995 disc, as well as a set of their favorites. Jason Narducy is also on the bill. The show starts at 9:00 PM.

The Rebuilder Concert Series continues on February 4th with performances by power pop bands The Bradburys and Too Much Saturn, along with the more punk-oriented Zero The Hero at the Rhode Centre in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Tickets for this all ages show, which also includes an art exhibit, are $10. People 21 or older with an ID can purchase alcohol. All three bands will be selling CDs and t shirts.

Brad Elvis, drummer for The Handcuffs, recently reported that he and his wife, lead vocalist-guitarist Chloe F. Orwell, are already working on the follow-up CD to the band’s 2011 gem, Waiting For The Robot.

The Bangles are offering a Super Fan Pack of their 2011 release Sweetheart Of The Sun for $59.98. It includes an autographed CD, poster, shirt, handwritten lyrics, a vinyl LP, and an album download. There’s also a Deluxe Pack for $29.98 that’s minus the handwritten lyrics and LP. Elsewhere on The Bangles front, here's a birthday wish for guitarist-vocalist Vicki Peterson, who just turned 21 the other day.

Today’s edition of the superb online newsletter The Second Disc brings writer Joe Marchese’s profile on The Move Live At The Fillmore 1969. The two-disc set, which is comprised of restored tapes that belonged to the late Carl Wayne (the band’s lead vocalist), is due out in England on February 13th, and in the U.S. on February 21st. The tracks include a cover of “Open My Eyes” by The Nazz, as well as an extended version of “I Can Hear The Grass Grow.”

I had the honor of meeting Carl Wayne in 2002 when he was touring with The Hollies in place of retired lead vocalist Allan Clarke. Wayne was a classy guy who loved meeting fans, but I wish I had been as familiar with his amazing career when we met as I am now. Hopefully, The Move Live At The Fillmore 1969 will help a lot more people appreciate Wayne and The Move.

Maple Mars singer-guitarist Rick Hromadka is one of four guest vocalists featured on the new The Collaboration Series - Movement One EP by Two Sheds Jackson. The German band takes its name from the funny Monty Python skit about composer Arthur “Two Shed” Jackson. Hromadka can be heard singing on “Beautiful Sunchild,” a melodic tune that would have fit in pretty well on the last Maple Mars CD, Galaxyland.

Laura and Linda Good have started recording as The Twigs again. The singing-songwriting fraternal twins fronted the new wave band back when they both lived in Chicago, and are in the process of mixing the first single from a forthcoming CD.

CD Review: Dum Dum Girls - Only In Dreams

Only In Dreams once again finds the California-based Dum Dum Girls adding sharp edges to the 1960s girl group sound. While they may not have invented the approach (Blondie and The Go-Go’s were there first) they certainly have mastered it. Each track on their second effort yields an irresistible melody, embellished with twanging guitars and adventurous harmonies.

Several songs deal with heartache, whether it be the loss of a loved one or the end of a romance. When lead vocalist-guitarist Dee Dee sings, “Where can I go where the sorrow will not find me?” on “Heartbeat (Take It Away),” her voice is full of melancholy. Like Chrissie Hynde, she can easily switch from vulnerable to vicious, as she spits out a series of put-downs on “Just A Creep.” The energetic tracks, like “Always Looking” and “Wasted Away” are particularly engaging, but Only In Dreams is a pleasure from start to finish.

CD Review: The Luck Of Eden Hall - Belladonna Marmalade

I reviewed Butterfly Revolutions Vol. 1 by Chicago psychedelic rockers The Luck Of Eden Hall for the Illinois Entertainer in the Fall of 2011 and later posted it here. But I haven’t come across the recently released Butterfly Revolutions Vol. 2 yet.

In the meantime, here’s a look at how it all started for The Luck Of Eden Hall. I wrote this review of their debut CD, Belladonna Marmalade for the Illinois Entertainer in 1993.

When Luck Of Eden Hall vocalist Gregory Curvey sings, “You can take a trip with me” on “Take A Trip,” it’s an invitation to join him in a whole new dimension. Listeners are transformed to miniature size and frolic among berries, walnuts, and dandelions while being serenaded by crickets and honeybees. As the day-glo graphics for Belladonna Marmalade suggest, this Chicago-based band has a lot of psychedelic influences.

“Darling Dear” gets the album off to a hard-hitting start before evolving into a more ornate arrangement. The title track travels a similar route and flows into the captivating maritime yarn, “Siren.” On the guitar-driven “Lilywhite,” a man strolling down a path spies maidens bathing in a stream and decides to join them. “Reel To Reel,” which sets fanciful imagery to a steady beat, is a prime example of The Luck Of Eden Hall’s potent blend of magic and muscle.

CD Review: The Good Natured - Skeleton

The Good Natured pretty much live up to their name on Skeleton, a seven-song EP with an obvious debt to 1980s synth rock. Unfortunately, cheerfulness isn’t always the appropriate attitude as this English trio veers from potential hit singles to more complex tracks. The highly polished arrangements and 20-year old lead vocalist Sarah McIntosh’s fetching accent ensure nothing misfires on this stateside debut, but it’s hard not to long for a few rougher edges.

“Be My Animal,” with McIntosh’s perky calls of “whoa uh oh” could be the least provocative invitation to wild abandonment on record, and the title track likewise suffers from a bit too much saccharine. The Good Natured have better luck on the melodic “Wolves,” which taps into past synth rock masters like Lush or Siouxsie & The Banshees. The more expansive keyboards and soaring vocals on “Hourglass” and “Your Body Is A Machine” also prove this band has a lot of potential.

Trying to determine the Best CDs of 2011 reminds me of a scene from the annual Christmas special, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Santa ponders his list of boys and girls, and finally decides they’ve all been pretty good.

The Neverly Brothers are performing at Cutting Hall tonight in my home town of Palatine at 8:00 PM. The trio’s entertaining rock history lesson/live performance is well-suited to this classy little venue, which frequently presents concerts, stage productions, and independent films. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors or students.

Speaking of flicks at Cutting Hall, Blue Whiskey Cinema presents its next monthly screening of award-winning indie films on January 16th, at 7:30 PM. The once a month series continues on February 15th, March 7th, April 17th, May 16th, and June 13th. Each of those dates is a Wednesday. See the Blue Whiskey website for more details.

Energetic indie rockers Magatha Trysty will be part of a quadruple bill at Martyrs’ tonight, along with Parts Per Million, Geoff Dolce, and Kerosene Stars. Show time is 9:30 PM.

Secret Colours, a Chicago band whose self-titled 2010 CD deftly tapped into 1990s shoegazer music will be performing tomorrow night at The Empty Bottle. Chances are they’ll be playing songs from their new five-song release, EP3. Apteka is also on the bill. Secret Colours’ dark and ambitious video for “Faust,” the lead-off track from EP3, can be viewed on the band’s website.

The Demilos, whose self-produced documentary, Revolving Doors chronicled the various members who have come and gone over the years, have now broken up. However, they will be releasing a covers CD sometime this year. Filmmaker/band member Mike Snyder doesn’t rule out a reunion at some point, and given the band’s history, that seems entirely possible.

On a sad note, Sean Bonniwell, the deep-voiced lead singer of the 1960s band Music Machine has passed away due to lung cancer.

Expo 76, the eclectic covers band whose members include veterans of Chicago’s indie rock scene, have a gig at The Beat Kitchen tomorrow night. Expo 76 vocalist-guitarist Dag Juhlin, who also performs with The Slugs, Poi Dog Pondering, The Greenwoods, and 80 other bands, decided to partake in a recent Facebook trend of posting a song that was Number 1 in the charts the day you were born. Ever the kidder, he picked “Gregorian Chant - Deum verum.”

The Chicago band, Metropolly, will have a new EP out sometime in 2012. Singer-guitarist Holly Senchak made quite an impression portraying Courtney Love when Metropolly covered Hole as part of a tribute show last Halloween at The Abbey Pub. She also sang back-up during John Aselin’s Rolling Stones tribute that same night.

The Smithereens will have veteran keyboards player Andy Burton on board when they perform in Annapolis, MD, Falls Church, VA, Philadelphia, and New York City this month. Burton has logged stage time with Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny, and Robert Plant. Also, on The Smithereens front, the song “Sorry,” from Smithereens 2011, took the number 8 slot in the Little Steven's Underground Garage Coolest Song In The World 2011 Listeners Poll.

It’s always fun to check out Scotland’s music scene via The Pop Cop blog site. A January post gives a preview of the upcoming festival season over there, and some of the event names are pretty imaginative. A few examples: King Tut’s New Year’s Revolution; The Electric Frog; Beatdoon Festival; The Big Stooshie; Rockness; and Doune The Rabbit Hole.

Tickets are now on sale for Dot Dot Dot’s House Of Blues show along with AM Taxi, State and Madison, and The Scissors on February 3rd.

According to The Second Disc online newsletter, Grace Potter of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals offers her take on the classic lounge tune, “Fly Me To The Moon” on a soundtrack for the Pan Am TV show coming out January 17th. Other songs on Pan Am: Music From And Inspired By The Original Series include a new version of The Beatles’ “Do You Want To Know A Secret” by Nikki Jean; and the original versions of Bobby Darin’s “Call Me Irresponsible,” Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66’s “Mas Que Nada,” and Brenda Lee’s “Break It To Me Gently.”

CD Review: Caithlin de Marrais - Red Coats

Palatine Alert: The Neverly Brothers are coming to Cutting Hall tomorrow (January 6th) for a performance at 8:00 PM. The trio covers songs from the birth of rock and roll through the British Invasion, and is a lot of fun.

And now, here’s a review that I originally wrote for the Illinois Entertainer.

Red Coats is the second solo effort from former Rainer Maria frontwoman Caithlin de Marrais since the indie rock band broke up in 2007. Marrais initially recorded these songs as a series of demos in her basement, and the final product retains that intimate setting. It’s well suited to her lilting vocals and poetic observations.

Most of Red Coats breezes by with bubbling synthesizer arrangements to help set the mood. “Lovers Light” captures the exhilaration of a moonlit dance, while “Rose Wallpaper,” with its “da da da da” scat singing, and the more rock-oriented “Hot Day” are sexy and fun. The mood darkens a bit on “Belong,” and “Sorry” has a wistful sadness about it, but these songs, along with the overly sentimental “City Girl” hardly dampen the overall lighthearted spirit of Red Coats.

The Hollies: Look Through Any Window 1963 -1975

The Hollies appeared on countless TV shows back in their heyday but only a few of those performances have surfaced in more recent years, primarily on VH1. The recently released The Hollies: Look Through Any Window 1963 - 1975, which is being billed as the first official documentary on the band, offers 22 songs, along with running commentary from original members Graham Nash, Tony Hicks, Allan Clarke, and Bobby Elliott. This is the fifth installment in the critically acclaimed British Invasion series from Eagle Vision/Reelin’ In The Years, with re-transferred, re-mastered footage of the original performances.

All of The Hollies’ biggest hits are included, and the musicians offer some interesting background as to how they were recorded. Elton John was paid £12 to play piano on “He Aint Heavy, He’s My Brother;” “Carrie Anne” was a thinly veiled tribute to Marianne Faithful; and “Jennifer Eccles,” with that cloying wolf whistle all The Hollies came to hate, was an overtly commercial reaction to the failure of Nash’s ambitious “King Midas In Reverse” to crack the UK’s Top Ten singles chart. Clarke explains that the delicate ballad, “Wings” was inspired by Neil Young’s “Expecting To Fly.”

At the heart of The Hollies: Look Through Any Window 1963 - 1975 is a ten-minute film created by famed producer George Martin that shows the band recording “On A Carousel” at Abbey Road. It’s bird’s eye view of Nash, Clarke, and Hicks crafting the impeccable three-part harmonies that would eventually earn them a place in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

2011 Memories - Bangles At The House Of Blues

Another concert highlight from 2011. The Bangles came to The House Of Blues in Chicago to support their first CD in a number of years, Sweetheart Of The Sun. Having Vintage Trouble, a band that performs old school R&B as the opening act was an unusual choice, but judging from the audience’s reaction, it worked.

The Bangles didn’t hesitate to promote their most recent CD, Sweetheart Of The Sun at their House Of Blues concert in Chicago. In fact, they kicked things off with “Anna Lee (Sweetheart Of The Sun).” The melodic song was greeted warmly, although there was a much more emphatic roar of approval for “Hazy Shade Of Winter,” which followed directly after it. Still, The Bangles’ faith in their new material was merited, as several Sweetheart songs were expertly woven throughout a 90-minute career retrospective.

“In case you didn’t get the memo, we have a new recording out,” Vicki Peterson joked while introducing the stubbornly romantic “I’ll Never Be Through With You.” Debbi Peterson sang lead on her own rollicking “Ball N Chain,” and the majestic “Mesmerized” proved to be another newly minted highlight.

The performance included all the big hits, with “Manic Monday” coming fairly early on, but this was also an evening for those of us who were avid followers long before “Eternal Flame” topped the charts. Just as the show started, a version of the Bee Gees’ “In My Own Time” done by fellow Paisley Underground members The Three O’Clock blared over the sound system.

2011 Memories - Blondie & The Handcuffs

Another look back at one of the concert highlights of 2011. This time, it was a double bill at The House Of Blues this past Fall that paired legendary new wave artists Blondie with local indie rockers The Handcuffs. Note: This review originally appeared in the online Illinois Entertainer.

Unlike several veteran bands that cling to a repertoire of their old hits in concert, Blondie entertained a capacity crowd at House Of Blues Wednesday night with several tracks from its latest release, Panic Of Girls. The current line-up, which includes original members vocalist Deborah Harry, guitarist Chris Stein, and drummer Clem Burke, blasted through “Love Doesn’t Frighten Me” shortly after taking the stage. It’s a highly melodic new song that fits right in with the Blondie catalog. Surprisingly, Harry scarcely mentioned Panic Of Girls throughout the concert, as new songs like “What I Heard” and “Mother” seamlessly meshed with crowd favorites like “Dreaming,” “Union City Blues,” and “Call Me.”

Blondie’s intense energy ensured that the audience wouldn’t grow restless during the less familiar material, with Panic’s “Words In My Mouth” serving as the concert’s only slow song. Initially, Harry was barely recognizable in huge sunglasses and dowdy taffeta skirt, but by mid-show, she had ditched both for a more characteristic black jumpsuit and red belt. She charmed her fans, especially on an extended version of “Rapture” that found Blondie mining the song’s irresistible techno groove. There was a roar of approval as she spat out the line, “Do the punk rock!”

A brief cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Fight For The Right (To Party!)” served as a bridge from the delirious “Rapture” to the exuberant finale, “One Way Or Another” which had hundreds of people singing in unison. The encore began with a touching version of Johnny Thunders’ “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory” before Blondie said goodnight with their biggest hit, “Heart Of Glass.” It would have been nice to have heard “Rip Her To Shreds” or “Hanging On The Telephone,” but overall this was a courageous and high-powered mix of old and new music.

Chicago’s coed indie rock band The Handcuffs proved to be a potent opening act, drawing heavily from their impressive third CD, Waiting For The Robot, which had been released just the day before. Entertaining a crowd that’s eager to see a legend like Blondie is always a challenge, but the Chloe F. Orwell/Brad Elvis led group succeeded with energetic and melodic fare like “Miss You On Tuesday” and “Dirty Glitter.” Guitarist Ellis Clark provided plenty of firepower throughout The Handcuffs’ set, including a romping cover of Mott The Hoople’s “All The Way From Memphis.”

Four Auld Lang Synes

Another holiday rerun from years past. Hope everyone had fun last night and returned home safely.

There was a time when just about everybody thought of Guy Lombardo when it came to “Auld Lang Syne.” Lombardi and his Royal Canadians used to play it every New Year’s Eve on the radio and TV. Nowadays, probably nobody under 30 even knows who he is, although his version is available on iTunes. Somehow, it sounds particularly melancholy

“Auld Lang Syne” continues to be covered by various musicians. The version by The Smithereens on their catchy and festive Christmas With The Smithereens opens with the band harmonizing like a barbershop quartet before the guitars and drums kick in. From there, this emotional chestnut morphs into a pulsating surf rock tune that’s predominantly instrumental.

Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken also tackled the song with his side project Husky Team. This inventive instrumental take, which can be found on the Hi-Fi Christmas Party Volume 2 CD as well as on the Husky Team CD, Christmas In Memphis, mixes “Auld Lang Syne” with the Booker T & The MG’s 1960s hit, “Green Onions.”

“Auld Lang Syne” was also covered by a New Jersey band called The Cucumbers and can be found on the Ho Ho Ho Spice CD. The guitar-driven, slightly Celtic, power pop arrangement and Deena Shoskkes’s spirited vocals cast out any trace of sadness and offer instead an exhilarating sense of triumph. The journey’s over; the quest has been successful; we’ve won.

2011 was another challenging year. We’ve somehow survived it, but hope better circumstances lie ahead. It will take hard work, people putting aside fears and prejudices, and doing a much better job of finding solutions together.

2011 Memories - Paul McCartney At Wrigley Field

Here’s another concert highlight from the past year. Although I didn’t have a ticket to see Paul McCartney at Wrigley Field, I guessed correctly that I would be able to hear his performance if I hung around just outside the venue. This is as close as I’ve gotten to actually seeing a Beatle perform (unless you count Pete Best at the Fest For Beatles Fans in Chicago) and it was an unforgettable experience. Thanks, Mr. McCartney, for the magic.

As I wandered down Addison to Sheffield, I could hear the crowd inside cheering and McCartney playing “Hello Goodbye.” The sound quality was great. What a thrill to hear Paul McCartney performing a Beatles song in person. The people gathered on Sheffield were in high spirits, singing and dancing along with the music, chatting with friends, and sometimes just grinning at what they were experiencing. A father held hands with his two young daughters while they danced in a circle.

McCartney continued with a rousing version of “Junior’s Farm.” I could hear most of his comments between songs, and got chills when he called out, “Here’s one you may remember,” before launching into “All My Loving.” I could see a puzzle piece of the big screen inside the stadium from where I was standing, and from time to time, McCartney’s face would appear on it.

I wasn’t able to catch all of the anecdotes McCartney shared with the audience, but I heard bits about how thrilled he was to be playing at such a historical venue; a tribute to Jimi Hendrix that followed “Let Me Roll It”; and memories of playing guitar with George Harrison back in Liverpool. And the great songs kept coming. “Jet,” “Drive My Car,” “On The Night Before,” “Maybe I’m Amazed,” and “Paperback Writer” were all delivered via McCartney’s high energy performance. Even the more subtle tunes like “Long And Winding Road,” I Will,” and “Blackbird” drifted over the ivy-covered wall with perfect clarity.

When McCartney at one point asked, “Is that you screaming?” he could have talking to thousands of people in attendance.

According to The Hollies official website, the band’s 2012 50th Anniversary Tour will be making stops in South Africa, Scotland, and England. These are just the dates for February through April. America has become the Island of Misfit Toys in terms of Hollies tours, but maybe this year will be different.

Alkaline Trio has sold out two venues in the Chicago area this weekend. That includes an early gig tonight at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine and a New Year’s Eve show tomorrow at The Metro. After that, the Illinois-based punk/pop band is off to Europe for concert dates in England and Germany. Alkaline Trio released its latest CD, Damnesia, earlier this year.

Tomorrow night, Durty Nellie’s celebrates New Year's Eve with a double bill of Chicago-based talent; the jam/bluegrass band Cornmeal at 7:30 PM and rock singer-guitarist Aly Jados at 10:PM.

Other local New Year’s Eve action includes Material re-Issue with the lush and psychedelic Hushdrops and Redgrave (singer-guitarist Angie Mead and drummer Stephen Howard) at Reggies; synth rockers Dot Dot Dot at Giovanni’s in Rockford; 1950s -1980s cover band The Brill Babies, along with The Hornstars at Ballydoyle Irish Pub in Downers Grove; Cage The Elephant at The Aragon Ballroom; and Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Cracker, and Camper Van Beethoven at The House Of Blues.

While there have been countless parodies of public service announcements to prevent certain unsavory trends and behavior, Country & Western star Bryson Jones brings a homespun charm to the one he recently recorded. The Sin City All Stars musician’s ad to save guys from Tiny Cowboy Hat Syndrome is cleverly done, with a sharp zing toward the end.

The Court Theatre, which is now in its 57th season, will present the world premiere of Oren Jacoby’s adaptation of the Ralph Ellison novel Invisible Man. The play, directed by Christopher McElroen, will run from January 12th through February 19th at 5535 S. Ellis on the University of Chicago Campus. Call 773-753-4472 for further information.

Usually, all of the gigs listed on Broken Hearted Toy are in the Chicago area, but here’s one for garage rock fans in London. Happening Magazine, a worthy offshoot of the cool and retro Shindig Magazine, is sponsoring a triple bill at The Drop club. Thee Savage Kicks, The Mobbs (see December 13th post for CD review), and Bow Street Revolt will be performing during the 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM hours on January 7th. The 1960s/1970s inclined DJs, Phil Istine and Steve Coleman, will also be part of the entertainment.The Drop is located below The Three Crowns, 175 Stoke Newington High Street. Looks like these live events might become a regular thing for Happening.

Also, in merry old England, former Doctor Who star David Tennant can be heard narrating Earth Flight, a new nature documentary on BBC One that gives a bird’s eye view of famous landscapes. Perhaps we’ll be seeing it on public telly here in the States some day.

Memories Of 2011 - Material re-Issue At IPO - Chicago

Rather than try to recall a bunch of the year’s musical highlights in a single post, it seems more sensible to scatter them throughout the next few weeks. Here’s the first installment.

Note: Material re-Issue plays its final show this New Year’s Eve at Reggies at 2105 S. State Street in Chicago, with special guests Hushdrops and Redgrave.

The centerpiece of this year’s International Pop Overthrow - Chicago was the Material re-Issue performance at The Abbey Pub on April 23rd. According to IPO honcho David Bash, it was the first time one of his showcases had sold out in Chicago. Original members bassist-vocalist Ted Ansani and drummer Mike Zelenko joined forces with singer-guitarist Phil Angotti to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the release of Material Issue’s debut album, International Pop Overthrow.

Although no one could replace the band’s original lead-singer guitarist and composer, the late Jim Ellison, it was immediately clear Angotti had done his homework for this anniversary show. Material re-Issue performed the entire album in order, starting with the sterling trio of girl songs, “Valerie Loves Me,” “Diane,” and “Renee Remains The Same.” A thrilled audience gladly welcomed Material re-Issue back for a series of encores. With guitarist Jay O’Rourke of The Insiders joining in, the band performed “Next Big Thing,” “Goin’ Through Your Purse,” “Kim The Waitress,” and “Sixteen Tambourines.”

They could have played all night as far as the audience was concerned.

CD Review: Slaughterhouse 5 - Wide Open

Another reason I like Facebook: Thanks to the band Go Time and musician Tim Ferguson of The Red Plastic Buddha for some kind words posted about my efforts for Broken Hearted Toy and the Illinois Entertainer. Here’s a review I originally wrote for the Illinois Entertainer in 1993.

Slaughterhouse 5’s debut CD, Wide Open, should bring a smile to the face of any Anglophile with 14 tracks of catchy melodies and unmistakably British vocals. Lead singer-songwriter Davy Lawrence uses clever lyrics to keep things engaging even when he’s depicting the pitfalls and frustrations of romantic affairs. The Manchester-based group has been racking up comparisons to The Buzzcocks with its energetic arrangements.

Lawrence is particularly effective capturing the anxiety of a guy overwhelmed with a fear of losing his girlfriend on the haunting “If She Leaves Me Again.” “You’re Not So Beautiful,” “Inconvenience,” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy” bristle with hostility. Wide Open has its lighter moments as well, with “Right Next To Her” and “Don’t Go All Funny On Me,” and Slaughterhouse 5 switches from its usual frenetic pace for the more laid back satire of “The Stupid Ones.”

A Bit Behind My Time, As It Were

Last Friday’s Slumgullion was noticeably skimpy due to my holiday merry-making. As Bob Crachit would say, it’s only once a year, and it won’t be repeated. So here are some additional bits that should have been included.

The Seventh Annual Alex Chilton Birthday Bash takes place tomorrow night, December 28th, at The Empty Bottle in Chicago. In addition to honoring one of power pop’s most influential musicians, the event will benefit The National Association of Free Clinics. The scheduled performers are Adam Fitz, Certain Stars, For Pilots, Gran Prixx, Injured Parties, Jen Saint Stjärna, Khalid Hanifi, Love & Radiation, Michael Heaton, Phil Angotti, Urban Twang, Wells-next-the-Sea and Scott Niekelski of Go Time! There’s an $8 cover charge for all this fun, which gets underway at 8:00 PM. The Empty Bottle is located at 1035 N. Western Avenue.

Go Time! has a record release party for its new 16-song Boneshaker CD coming up on January 21st at The Horseshoe on Lincoln Avenue. Some of the tracks have already been getting airplay on college radio stations.

WhiteWolfSonicPrincess, the alt-rock band fronted by Black Forest Theatre founders James Moeller and Carla Hayden, has a gig at the Red Line Tap on January 6th. There are two other groups on the bill, which is a lot of music for a $5 cover charge. The show starts with Tron Ate My Baby at 9:30, WWSP takes the stage at 10:30, and Somersault Factory wraps things up at 11:30. WhiteWolfSonicPrincess recently completed its latest CD and will be actively promoting it in 2012. Looking forward to hearing it.

Meanwhile, The Telepaths, the more garage rock oriented combo Moeller formed with occasional Black Forest member Pat Über-Critic McDonald, has an “Eve of the Eve of the Eve” gig this Thursday, December 29th, at Ultra Lounge at 2169 N. Milwaukee in Chicago. Doors open at 9:00 PM.

Congratulations to WXRT on selling every last copy of Live From The Archives Volume 13. The Chicago FM radio progressive rock station always warns that procrastinating shoppers could be left out in the cold, but this is the first time I can think of that one of its limited edition collections has sold out so quickly. Was it a particularly strong lineup of artists, or was it the favorable review on Broken Hearted Toy? (See December 8th post.)

The Second Disc online newsletter recently reported that Squeeze member Glenn Tilbrook has just released When Daylight Appears: The Demo Tapes 1985 - 1991. The 20-track CD features stripped-down versions of melodic Squeeze gems like “Hourglass,” “Hits Of The Year,” “The Prisoner,” and “Footprints.” Currently, the only listing I see for it on Amazon is an import.

As someone who’s been known to smirk at the bad grammar and misspellings on Facebook posts, I was particularly embarrassed to discover that I had wished a number of bands a successful 2112. Can’t decide whether my excuse is going to be that I believe these musicians are going to live a very long time, or that they’re all going to record Rush tribute CDs in the coming year.

MARY:

I can’t believe how crowded this store is today!

GEORGE:

That’s what we get for shopping on Christmas Eve.

MARY:

Whatever. Can you hold my bag while I try on these pants?

GEORGE:

Sure.

MARY EXITS TO FITTING ROOM. CLARENCE, DRESSED IN A LONG BLACK COAT AND HAT, MYSTERIOUSLY APPEARS.

CLARENCE:

Waiting for someone?

GEORGE:

Yeah. My wife’s trying on a pair of pants.

CLARENCE:

You have no wife.

GEORGE:

How’s that?

CLARENCE:

You got your wish. No wife or family, no job, no missing $8,000. It’s like you

were never born.

GEORGE:

(BACKING AWAY FROM CLARENCE) I’ll just wait over here for my wife.

A Hipster Holiday With Carl

One last present under the tree. Here's a rerun of a post I first did a few years back.

Back in the year 2000, Carl Wayne took over for Allan Clarke as the lead vocalist for The Hollies. Although the band hadn’t released an album since 1983, it still toured extensively throughout Europe. Considering that Clarke had one of the more distinctive voices in rock, whoever replaced him would be facing a huge challenge. Wayne never attempted to imitate his predecessor. As a founding member of the highly regarded English band The Move, as well as a veteran of the stage, he had the confidence to be himself. In the four years he performed with The Hollies before passing away from throat cancer, he established himself as “the people’s Hollie” - - a performer who loved interacting with fans and bringing them closer to their favorite band.

In 2003, Wayne collaborated with the German synth due et cetera on a CD with three versions of the classic holiday song, “White Christmas.” The disc was made available through Wayne’s website, and fans could choose between an English language version or a German language version. The singer autographed each copy with a gold ink pen. The “True Feelings Mix” and the “Radio Mix” have slower, keyboards-based arrangements that showcase Wayne’s deep, soulful vocals. They’re nice, but perhaps a little too mainstream for a power pop fan’s taste. The “Swing Mix,” which features horns, finds Wayne taking a more peppy approach, and it’s a lot of fun. “White Christmas,” along with other Wayne and et cetera songs, like “Blackberry Way” and “Sorry Suzanne,” are available on iTunes.

The Hollies themselves never recorded a Christmas song, even though their famous three-part harmonies would have been well-suited to the task. Plus, the band reportedly took its name from the fact their first gig was on Christmas Eve, and the club was decorated with holly. The Hollies did engage in holiday revelry on British TV shows, but to my knowledge, none of that material was ever officially released. The closest I’ve found is “Julhalsning,” on the import CD, The Hollies - Swedish Hits And More. It’s a recording the band made in the mid-1960s for the blond-haired readers of Bild magazine, that features Graham Nash and the boys joking around and singing a very silly and very short version of - - - “White Christmas.”

Merry Christmas!

Here's another Post Of Christmas Past. This time, it's a collection of holiday tunes from various sources.

“Thanks For Christmas” Few bands can match XTC when it comes to crafting clever lyrics and indelible melodies. “Thanks For Christmas” stands out on New Wave Xmas, a Rhino various artists compilation that also includes “2000 Miles” by The Pretenders and “Christmas Day” by Squeeze. Introduced with some triumphant horn playing, “Thanks For Christmas” finds XTC using gorgeous harmonies while creating scenes like Santa’s reindeer resting after a hard-working Christmas Eve and ecstatic kids decorating trees.

“Come Around” Appearing on Mindy Smith’s 2007 My Holiday CD, this tune evokes vintage Bangles with ringing guitars and layered vocals as it calls on children, women, and men to celebrate Christmas by worshiping together.

“George Bailey” A lot of current holiday songs mention It’s A Wonderful Life, but Brooklyn-based singer-bass player Carolyn Sills goes them one better by devoting an entire song to Frank Capra’s put-upon hero. Set to an inviting arrangement that mixes twangy Country & Western music with a bit of the 1960s girl group sound, “George Bailey” merrily whisks us off to Bedford Falls. Sills notes that the character won her over as a kid. “George Bailey, I’ll love you ‘til the day I die,” she sings on the chorus, echoing the words of Mary Hatch. “Every Christmas Eve, you make me cry.”

“Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” The Pretenders recorded this gem for the 1987 charity LP, A Very Special Christmas, and it remains one of the best versions of this popular standard.

“What’s This?” A musical sleigh ride from the soundtrack of Nightmare Before Christmas, this fully orchestrated song has quick rhymes and clever imagery. “What’s This?” follows Jack Skellington through Christmas Town as he discovers a holiday that’s completely foreign to him. Jack, of course, is more accustomed to the gross and ghoulish trappings of his domain, Halloween. “What’s this?” he continually asks in amazement as he encounters snow, caroling, gifts and elves for the first time.

“Winter Wonderland” The 1994 CD A Hello Dave Christmas With Friends aimed to raise funds to help children afflicted with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Imagine your car breaking down on a deserted country road while you’re driving to some party on Christmas Eve. You walk to the nearest open venue, which happens to be a rustic bar. Hello Dave is onstage and has the local townsfolk up and dancing to its Country & Western versions of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Silent Night,” and other classics. “Winter Wonderland” rocks to the loping bass lines played by Willis Potocki and some spirited harmonies from vocalist-guitarist Mike Himebaugh and vocalist Paul Bolger.

“We Wish You A Merry Christmas” Acoustic Christmas, released by The Daugherty McPartland Group in 1996, celebrates the holidays with an easy going vibe. Tim Daugherty’s fluid piano playing takes center stage throughout the CD, but Dennis McPartland on percussion, Bob Thompson on saxes and flutes, and Jim Munro on bass are also impressive. People who enjoyed Vince Guaraldi’s score for A Charlie Brown Christmas will find a lot to like here, and in fact, “Christmas Time Is Here” is included on Acoustic Christmas. “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” is both classy and fun, and like all of Acoustic Christmas, the perfect soundtrack for a friendly, holiday get-together.

“Double-0-Santa” The 2002 holiday compilation 50,000,000 Elves Fans Can’t Be Wrong lives up to its title with a variety of fun tracks, and “Double-0-Santa” by the Boston based band Seks Bomba is one the best. This lounge tune mixes the concepts of a Secret Santa and a secret agent, with humorous results. “Mistakes are bad for business, says the man called Father Christmas, AKA Double-0-Santa,” vocalist-guitarist Chris Cote reveals over a slinky guitar and keyboards arrangement. Santa isn’t too cool accept snacks, but it should be understood that he likes his “egg nog stirred, never shaken.”

Christmas Time With Chris Stamey And Friends

One last weekend of Posts Of Christmas Past. Hope everyone is enjoying a festive holiday.

Back in 1993, the release of a holiday album featuring The dBs and Big Star had visions of catchy songs dancing in the heads of power pop fans. Christmas Time by Chris Stamey And Friends not only delivered the gifts, it had the feel of an old-fashioned variety show. The performers were talented, fun, and at times, even devout.

Host Chris Stamey, a founding member of The dB’s, kicked things off with the catchy “Christmas Time.” Stamey also teamed up with vocalist-guitarist Wes Lachot for the wistful “Christmas Is The Only Time (I Think Of You)” and joined vocalist-keyboards player Cathy Harrington on the high-charged romance of “You’re What I Want For Christmas.” Harrington also entertained with her own festive song, “Sha La La.”

Big Star, the band most power pop musicians cite as a major influence, checked in with an original rocking hymn called “Jesus Christ,” and founder Alex Chilton offered a positively cozy acoustic version of “The Christmas Song.”

Vocalist-guitarist Peter Holsapple of The dB’s (and later a touring member of R.E.M.) served up a simple but beautiful “O Holy Night” while acoustic guitarist Brent Lambert’s “Silent Nocturne” was an instrumental take on “Silent Night.” Brent Lambert and Kirsten Lambert performed a low-key but engaging “Silver Bells,” and singer Syd Straw dished out holiday puns with her rendition of “(I’m Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear.”

The dB’s sounded like they were having a blast during the recording of this CD, especially on the high-speed “Holiday Spirit” and a totally loopy take on “Feliz Navidad.” In 2006, an expanded version of Christmas Time was released, with additional tracks from Don Dixon, Marshall Crenshaw, and other artists.

Best wishes for a safe and fun holiday weekend!

They won’t be giving out presents or singing Christmas carols, but Aaron Fox & The Reliables will be unwrapping new songs from a forthcoming CD during an acoustic show at the Uncommon Ground on Devon Avenue tonight. The power pop band will also be performing stripped down selections from its Late Too Soon CD. Show time is 9:00 PM, and there’s a $5 cover.

Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles has a melodic new song called “This Is The Place” that she’ll be performing at the 3rd Annual 30A Songwriter Festival in January. It’s an easy-going tribute to the South Walton area of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, where the event is being held. Hoffs has a solo gig on a Friday night and The Bangles will join Matthew Sweet for an afternoon show on the following day. The 3rd Annual 30A Songwriter Festival runs from January 13 -15.

The Haymakers Reunion at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine on Sunday, February 26th has lined up The Hounds, Bitch, Pezband Allstars, Madfox, One Arm Bandit, and Tantrum for its celebration/remembrance of the popular 1970s-80s rock club. Ticket price is $15, and there will also be t shirts on sale for $10. Check out the Haymakers Facebook page for more information.

Former Off Broadway vocalist Cliff Johnson recently announced on Facebook that he’s forming a new band called JohnsonSleezer with veteran guitarist John Sleezer and bassist Gordon Patriarca. Other musicians will be added based on upcoming auditions. I’m not familiar with Sleezer, but I first met Patriarca when we were both scribes for a paper called Metro Calendar.

This was before he went on to a varied and successful career performing with the power pop bands The Trouts and The Hotheads; the Cajun flavored The Remainders; the controversial Stevie Starlite; guitar slinger Don Griffin, and the Celtic band The Chicago Rovers. It should be interesting to hear the results of his new collaboration with Johnson and Sleezer.

Have A Jolly Trolley Christmas

Trolley’s Star Of Wonder comes on heels of the Milwaukee-based band’s well-crafted CD, Things That Shine And Glow (see December 12th post). Think of it as a Christmas bonus for power pop fans. The EP, which features three originals and two cover versions of well-known carols, is filled with ringing guitars, harmony vocals, and energetic arrangements.

“Describe Eternity” is least yule-inclined of the bunch; it’s an irresistible love song with lines like, “I know that eternity is you here with me.” The mid-tempo “It’s Christmas” deals with loneliness during the holiday season, and “Christmas In The Marketplace” explores complex emotions amidst all the gift shopping and cookie baking. “We Three Kings” and “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” stand out for the way Trolley stays true to the original sentiment of these classics while reinventing them in a power pop vein.

Just one question: What the heck is on the cover? My guess is a Beatles doll wearing a Santa hat. Star Of Wonder is available as a digital download on Trolley’s bandcamp page and could be a last minute present for that power pop fan on your Christmas list.

CD Review: Givers - In Light

When WXRT booked the Givers to play at its Live From The Archives Volume 13 bash at Martyrs’ earlier this month, the Louisiana band was virtually unknown in the Chicago area. That changed after an exuberant set led by singer-guitarist Taylor Guarisco and singer-percussionist Tiffany Lamson had audience members cheering and crowding around the stage. In Light is an adventurous debut CD that offers more of the chaotic fun that made the Givers so enjoyable in a live setting.

“Up Up Up” has the feel of children joyously playing a game, and introduces the dynamic harmonies of Guarisco and Lamson. William Henderson’s imaginative synths and keyboards create a space age ambience even as the rhythm section of drummer Kirby Campbell and bassist Josh Leblanc pays homage to the band’s Cajun roots. “Ripe,” which features some of Lamson’s best vocals, is an explosive song with abrupt tempo shifts, while “Meantime” is irresistibly festive. Most of these 10 tracks veer off in various directions, with Guarisco and Lamson taking turns on lead vocals and frequently joining forces. In Light is a unique and thoroughly enjoyable effort.

The Challenge Of Changes

Author Cherie Colyer is making rather merry today, and it’s not just because there are only five days left before Christmas, or one day before my wife’s birthday. Colyer’s Young Adult novel Embrace, a paranormal romance, is now available through Omnific Publishing, Amazon.com, and Barnes & Noble. There’s a Virtual Party taking place on her blogsite, and while I don’t fully comprehend the technology behind this event, I’m happy to participate.

One of the themes that runs through Embrace is the challenge of coping with change. Colyer’s main character Madison doesn’t appreciate the curves life has thrown her way, which include the end of a longtime friendship, as well as some mysterious circumstances. But she does perk up when she meets the attractive though secretive Isaac. Some changes can be beneficial.

There was a time when working on a novel usually resulted in a pile of crumpled typing paper on the floor. Thankfully, we live in a time when typos can be fixed quickly and entire paragraphs can be deleted or moved somewhere else in the manuscript. Even veteran writers who initially resisted the new technology, have come to see its amazing advantages. Things always get more interesting when people take chances, overcome their anxieties, and embark on a new adventure.

Like Colyer, I belong to the Northwest Illinois Chapter of the Society Of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and attend meetings where members share their work and exchange feedback. I had a sneak peek at the intriguing Embrace long before Colyer started posting teasers on Twitter and Facebook. It’s exciting to see one of our members achieving success.

So let's raise a virtual glass of champagne to congratulate Cherie Colyer on her book Embrace.

CD Review: Peggy Sue - Acrobats

The deceptively named English trio Peggy Sue continues to delve into the dark and mysterious on its sophomore effort, Acrobats although with a more amplified sound than on its 2010 debut, Fossils and Other Phantoms. Vocalists-guitarists Katy and Rosa (the band members go by first name only) weave harmonies throughout ominous but melodic arrangements, much like the female quartet Warpaint, while Olly adds dramatic drums and percussion. The lyrics can be murky and cryptic, but most seem to deal with power struggles within relationships.

The woman portrayed in the hypnotic “Song & Dance” laments “But he gave me nothing he did not want back,” while “Cut My Teeth” views a first romance as a learning experience. Peggy Sue taps into traditional English music on “Funeral Beat,” while the energetic “D.U.M.B.O.” feels more like a live folk rock performance. Melancholy strings augment lines like, “Come away from the window, I’m afraid of what you’ll see” on “Shadows,” but the most harrowing moments come on the final track, “There Always Was.” “There’s trouble in my blood,” the song’s protagonist notes over a tribal drum beat. “There always was.”

Christmas A Go Go - Part Two

The second half of this weekend's Post Of Christmas Past.

Little Steven Van Zandt was determined to increase the allure of this compilation by throwing in some genuine rarities. It’s safe to say there aren’t too many other holiday CDs that have a surf rock reinvention of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” delivered by 1950s kids show host, Soupy Sales. Listening to “Santa Claus Is Surfin’ To Town,” you can almost hear Little Steven chuckling like he does when he laughs at his own jokes on his radio show, Underground Garage. The clever lyrics come in waves of surfer lingo, as Sales describes Santa hanging 10 and delivering toys on his board. People who don’t live near the water can expect to see him making his rounds in his woody.

Christmas songs from time to time have depicted women with romantic designs on Santa, and that’s what the five ladies in the Swedish band, The Cocktail Slippers have in mind on “Santa’s Coming Home.” This catchy number laments the amount of time Santa’s work keeps him away via a Go-Go’s style arrangement with some fun vocal interplay. Actor Joe Pesci brings a wiseguy treatment to Gene Autry’s “If It Doesn’t Snow On Christmas.” Backed by a big band and spouting 1940s style patter like, “I would really feel much better if the mooch could fly a plane,” Pesci makes this version sound like it could have been recorded around the same time as Autry’s.

The Seattle-based Boss Martians give Charles Dickens a psychedelic spin with their high speed rock song, “3 Ghosts (A Modern X-mas Carol).” The band adds a touch of prog rock via Nick C’s energetic keyboard playing while vocalist-guitarist Evan Foster gives a first-person account of Scrooge’s eventful night, starting with a visit from Jacob Marley.

Singer Rufus Thomas is probably best remembered for his 1963 hit “Walking The Dog,” as well as an earlier duet with his daughter Carla, but he was also an R&B pioneer who first started recording in the late 1940s. The funky “I’ll Be Your Santa” is aimed at women instead of kids, and Thomas has his own concept of what bringing holiday joy entails. The bass guitar is the most prominent instrument in an arrangement that recalls Sly & The Family Stone, while Thomas’s vocals are both ribald and soulful.

Aussie garage rockers The Chevelles unleash a spirited take on a treasured hymn with the mostly instrumental “Come All Ye Faithful Surfer Girls.” The Electric Prunes’ psychedelic and slightly unsettling version of “Jingle Bells” has a spoken word intro that includes a special holiday greeting for Underground Garage listeners. The band then slinks into a slowed-down, heavy guitar arrangement, with vocals that sound like they’re coming from a chorus of over-served elves.

Ray Davies of The Kinks has always been a master of satire, and on “Father Christmas,” he leads the band through a funny tale of a retail store Santa being pummeled by destitute children. Set in Britain’s economically troubled 1970s, the wry lyrics describe the kids screaming, “Don’t give my sister a cuddly toy/We don’t want a jigsaw or monopoly money/We only want the real McCoy.” One kid wants a job for his father so the family will have food to eat. Although Davies clearly meant the song to be funny, he sneaks in a charitable message that’s in tune with the season. “Have yourself a merry merry Christmas/Have yourself a good time/But remember the kids who got nothin’/While you’re drinking down your wine.”

Christmas A-Go-Go - Part One

Another December weekend Post Of Christmas Past. Originally, it took four individual posts to cover this CD, but I'm hoping to handle it in two parts this time around.

Guitarist/actor/radio show host Little Steven Van Zandt morphed into a crazed Santa for this ambitious 2008 holiday compilation, determined to find just the right gift for everyone on his list. Fortunately, he doesn’t care if the recipients are naughty or nice, just as long as they listen to his syndicated weekly program, Underground Garage. The presents are rock and roll holiday songs, many of which would be unavailable if not for Little Steven’s generosity.

An ultra rare recording of Keith Richards romping through the Chuck Berry chestnut “Run Rudolph Run” kicks things off in a blues-rock vein. As Little Steven has pointed out on his show, this tale of the jet-speed flying reindeer helping St. Nick deliver toys was not composed by Berry, even though the rock pioneer certainly made it his own. Richards pretty much sticks to the original arrangement, but his hoarse vocals and energetic guitar playing enable him to put his stamp on it.

Bob Seger And The Last Heard’s funky “Sock It To Me Santa” is another treasure from the vault. Sounding like fellow Detroit native Mitch Ryder, Seger taps into vintage Motown as he barks out a litany of requests for toys. He proclaims in a spoken word intro that Santa’s got a brand new bag, and as the tune rolls along to a bottom heavy backbeat, it’s easy to imagine Santa wearing a long cape and looking a lot like James Brown. The Ramones bring their instantly identifiable revved-up sound to “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)” as Joey Ramone plays the role of a guy pining for a holiday truce with his girlfriend. “Christmas aint the time for breaking each other’s hearts,” he notes.

I’m guessing that “All Alone On Christmas,” which features vocalist Darlene Love being backed by The E Street Band, has to be one of Little Steven’s favorite tracks on the CD. And not just because he wrote it and plays guitar on it. Love, of course, was part of the roster of stars on the Phil Spector produced A Christmas Gift For You, which many consider to be the best rock and roll Christmas album ever recorded. With Clarence Clemons blasting away on his sax, and just about everybody else in the band singing along, “All Alone On Christmas” beautifully melds modern rock and the 1960s. Ringing guitars and great harmonies help current Brit rockers The Len Price 3 hark back to the original British Invasion on “It’s Christmas Time Ebenezer.”

On the relentlessly cheerful “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday,” Roy Wood’s Wizzard uses the Wall Of Sound approach of Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift For You to build an entire palace. As a founding member of Electric Light Orchestra, Wood was accustomed to working with stringed instruments, and he employs a ton of them, along with horns, and a children’s choir on this showstopper. The energetic production evokes an old fashioned TV variety show.

Tina Sugandh’s beautifully sung “White Christmas” begins with the standard arrangement, but soon drifts off to India via exotic sitars and tablas. If George Harrison had wanted to include a Christmas song on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, it would have sounded like this.

There are more than three musicians in the Chesterfield Kings, and their knack for tapping into Aftermath era Rolling Stones has earned them a place of honor among garage rock fans like Mr. Van Zandt. “Hey, Santa Claus” was probably one of the first tracks he considered when he decided to create this party-themed holiday compilation. It kicks off with a classic Chuck Berry riff before lead vocalist Greg Prevost approaches the man in red with a list of requests, including a girlfriend and a new car. Sounding like Mick Jagger, Prevost sings, “I hope you have time to stop off in your sleigh.”

Former Stray Cats vocalist-guitarist Brian Setzer launched a lucrative second career by recreating the Big Band sound of the 1940s. He struck gold again when his Brian Setzer Orchestra started recording Christmas CDs like Dig That Crazy Christmas and Boogie Woogie Christmas. “Santa’s Got A Hot Rod,” with its highly energetic swinging arrangement, call-and response vocals, and twangy guitar, is a prime example of how Setzer gets the job done. And like most of his work, it’s a lot of fun.

The Hollies Through The Ages Volume One.

You Say It's His Birthday. Best wishes to Tony Hicks on his birthday. Tony has served as lead guitarist and harmony vocalist for The Hollies for almost the entire 50 years (in 2112) the band has been around. He’s the bloke who came up with the idea for “Stop Stop Stop,” the 1966 hit single that features his distinctive banjo playing. Once again, I highly recommend the recently released DVD Look Through Any Window The Hollies 1962 - 1975. Tony, along with Graham Nash, Allan Clarke, and Bobby Elliott, provides running commentary throughout this entertaining documentary, and demonstrates some of the more interesting riffs he’s played over the years.

No Cover For Covers. There’ll be no admission fee when The Beatle Brothers perform at the Countryside Saloon tonight. The group has been covering the fab four and other 1960s bands for 25 years. Countryside Saloon is located at 2501 Ballard Road in Des Plaines. Show time is 9:00 PM.

Wonder If Julianna Hatfield Knows About This. The Del Fuegos, the critically acclaimed 1980s garage rock band who were mentioned in Hatfield’s “My Sister,” have a brief reunion tour coming up next year. It kicks off on February 22nd in Boston, and includes gigs in New York, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and St. Louis. They have a date at Lincoln Hall in Chicago on February 25th. It would be great to hear some of those classic tracks like “Nervous And Shakey,” “Backseat Nothing,” and “Mary Don’t Change” performed live.

The Beat Is Back. Another guitar-driven band that got its start a few decades ago, The Paul Collins Beat, is coming back to Chicago with a gig at Ultra Lounge on Milwaukee Avenue on February 3rd. Collins has been on a roll since releasing one of the better power pop CDs of 2010 with King Of Power Pop.

Pants On Fyre. Happening Magazine, an offshoot of the groovy neo-1960s publication, Shindig, reported in a recent email that another legendary garage rock band, The Lyres have resurfaced in London. The Boston-based group that gave us classics like “I Want Help You Ann” as well as a letter-perfect cover of The New Colony Six nugget, “I Confess,” is on a European tour that takes them to the 93 Feet East club on February 13th. Prior to that, they’ll be playing gigs in Italy.

It’s Beginning To Rock A Lot Like Christmas. The syndicated radio show Underground Garage is always worth checking out, but it’s even more fun when host Little Steven Van Zandt unpacks all his favorite holiday songs on the annual Christmas Special. Not sure if this year's party will be a two-part event, as it has been in the past. Underground Garage airs on WXRT each Sunday from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

Mania And Monroes. The Melismatics, the Minneapolis-based alt rock band that has its next CD, Mania, coming out on Pravda Records in January, just announced on Facebook that it’s also working on a CD with Tony Ortiz, the former singer of The Monroes. “Missing Man,” a song from the collaboration is up on YouTube and sounds pretty intriguing.

Let’s Paint Their Smiles On Upside Down. The New Jersey band Mike Daly and The Planets has created a theme song for those of us who have never liked Bozo or any of his ilk. I’ve been afraid of them (clowns, not Mike Daly and The Planets) since I saw a TV show as a child where some guy was haunted by a ghost clown. “Kill A Clown (No, Not Really),” has a catchy, guitar-driven arrangement reminiscent of Webb Wilder or possibly ZZ Top, along with some exuberant backup vocals. It’s filled with funny lyrics about offing people with fake red noses like, “I killed a clown in Kalamazoo/Made him choke on his own kazoo” and “Killed them clowns in Zanzibar/Ran them off the road in that tiny car.” The single is available as a digital download at the band’s website, Amazon, CDBaby, and iTunes.

I should mention that Frank Carr from my former comedy group Famous In The Future, did a similar song/skit a number of years ago. Now that's someone who really hates clowns.

Heart's In The Right Place. Heart may not have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this year, but at least the South By Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival is giving the Wilson sisters some props. Ann and Nancy will be featured speakers on March 15th at the Austin Convention Center, and they’ll also be performing with Heart at a TBA venue at the event.

Tears On My TARDIS. Even though it was inevitable given the show’s rotating cast format, I was still sad when The Nerdist website reported yesterday that companions Rory and Amy will be leaving Doctor Who in the coming season. I didn’t immediately warm up to actress Karen Gillian as Amy Pond, but it wasn’t too long before she was exuding the spunk and sexiness that are the hallmarks of The Doctor’s female companions. Arthur Darvill, who portrayed Amy’s husband Rory, is a likable and supportive guy that a lot of male viewers probably identify with. Here’s hoping Gillian and Darvill continue to appear at Doctor Who conventions and promotions, because it seems like they have great rapport with the series’ current lead actor, Matt Smith.

Songs Sung (About A) Blue Police Box. On a related note, Chicago Tribune writer Christopher Borrelli had an article in yesterday’s edition about Niles North High School student Allegra Rosenberg. She’s been making a name for herself by writing songs about Doctor Who episodes and posting them on her YouTube Channel, Stop! It’s Ginger Time! Noted author Neil Gaiman and BBC America executive Matt Stein are among her fans.

Hi-Fi Christmas Party Volume 3

As musician Dan Pavelich of The Bradburys points out in the liner notes for this latest installment in the Hi-Fi Christmas Party series, it’s been eight years since he first hit upon the idea of putting together a holiday CD to help fund research to find a cure for Von Willebrand’s disease. At the time, Pavelich had recently learned that his daughter Mari was afflicted with the rare blood disorder. The first Hi-Fi Christmas Party primarily featured power pop acts exuding a positive vibe through easy-going melodic songs. Nothing too wild, but a fun album that benefited a good cause.

Hi-Fi Christmas Party Volume Three follows in the amiable tradition of its two predecessors, with another selection of mostly original material. Almost half of these tracks were created in the last year, while some have been around a little longer. Lisa Mychols gets the ornament rolling with “Joy Is In The Giving,” a celebration of the season with lines like, “Share the good that comes your way.” Sketch Middle’s “Very Very, Merry Merry” has a Material Issue buzz to it, while The Jigsaw Seen gets psychedelic on “What About Christmas?” The Click Beetles, a Pavelich side project with drummer Ed James; The Yule Logs; and The Sun Kings contribute catchy holiday tunes; as do Jamie & Steve from The Spongetones and Jim Babjak of The Smithereens.

Pavelich invited a few non-power pop acts to join the party on Volume 3. Tinsley Ellis’s “Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin’,” which originally appeared on the Alligator label, is a clever blues romp, and Ash Can School (the married team of David & Janet Aiello) channel early Chuck Berry on “Christmas List Boogie.” The Brothers Figaro Orchestra goes all the way back to the Roaring 20s for a swell take on the standard “Jolly Old St. Nicholas.” And Mari Pavelich recites Linus’s much loved, and often quoted “The Meaning Of Christmas” speech from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

As with the very enjoyable Hi-Fi Christmas Party Volume Two, this third effort suggests this series could become a holiday tradition. The CD can be ordered through Jam Recordings.

CD Review: Neil Diamond - The Very Best Of Neil Diamond

2011 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Neil Diamond kicks off a tour in February in support a new compilation of original studio recordings titled The Very Best Of Neil Diamond. While the singer-songwriter is no stranger to the greatest hits treatment, this batch stretches across every record company he’s worked for, starting with his early days at Bang. There aren’t any rarities or surprises among the 23 tracks, but The Very Best Of Neil Diamond does provide an opportunity to consider his impact on rock music.

One of the reasons Diamond’s earlier work has been covered by everyone from Deep Purple to UB40 could be his ability to set authentic emotions to melodic arrangements. “Kentucky Woman” and “Red Red Wine” are included here, as are Diamond’s original takes on “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon,” which would later be put to such good use by Urge Overkill in Pulp Fiction, and “I’m A Believer,” which would become one of The Monkees’ better songs. He even sounded convincing on “Solitary Man” and “Shiloh,” both of which could have come across as sappy in another composer’s hands.

Diamond broadened his approach over decades of recording. The mysterious “Holly, Holy” incorporated fervent gospel singing, while “Brother Loves Travelling Salvation Show” could have come from a rock opera. Long time fans might not have bought into “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” but they’ll always want to clap and sing along with the 1960s classic “Cherry Cherry.”

CD Review: The Mobbs - It’s . . . The Mobbs

Generally speaking, revved up guitars and vocals are found on punk rock albums. But on their wildly careening debut release, the U.K. trio The Mobbs whisk listeners back to the nascent days of The Yardbirds and The Who. It’s . . . The Mobbs is a nonstop party comprised of sonic blasts and rave ups, with an occasional dash of Monty Pythonesque humor adding to the fun.

“Pull Yourself Together!!!” finds lead vocalist-guitarist Joe B. Humbled shouting the title in John Cleese fashion over an otherwise instrumental track with an ominous bass line. These guys also go for minimalist lyrics on “Bully!!!” and “Gad . . . It’s The Mobbs!!!” but are capable of stinging satire. The clever “Old Square Eyes,” which is set to a mid-1960s arrangement, warns against the dangers of spending too much time watching TV or playing video games. “You Be The Judge” bristles with youthful rebellion.

The Mobbs dabble in the blues on the slinky “Better The Devil You Know,” which applies the old adage to relationships, and a funny tribute to cobblers called “The N-Town Odd Shoe Blues.” On the harder rock of “No Belief,” Joe B. Humbled confides, “I’ve got the ravings of a madman” but like everything else on It’s . . . The Mobbs, it’s all in good fun.

CD Review: Trolley - Things That Shine And Glow

Most of the 14 songs on Trolley’s latest effort, Things That Shine And Glow depict guys who are either bewildered or frustrated by the women they encounter. Still, relationships are the only things that go wrong on this well-crafted CD, which carries on the best traditions of Midwestern power pop while tapping into the adventurous days of 1960s rock. Hard to believe this Milwaukee-based quartet has been around since 1995 without making a bigger splash on the music scene.

Bassist Terry Hackbarth, guitarist-keyboards player Mike Perette, and guitarist Paul J. Wall combine for inventive harmonies throughout the CD while drummer Nick Zahn drives the beat. The careening “I Woke Up” would have fit in perfectly with bands like The Lyres and The Chesterfield Kings on Rhino’s celebration of 1980s garage bands, Children Of Nuggets. “She’s The Kind Of Girl” has the same raw feel, while “The Calico Cat” sounds like Genesis transplanted back to the height of the psychedelic era.

The irresistibly catchy “In The End,” which laments a self-destructive girlfriend with lines like, “Even though you are my kind, Maybe you’re not such a find,” should strike a chord with Off Broadway fans. Trolley mimics the multi-faceted approach of The Beatles by offering the hard-edged “That Made Me Wanting You,” which echoes George Harrison, as well as tapping into Paul McCartney’s playful side on “Out Of Love.” The willingness to experiment on Things That Shine And Glow keeps listeners guessing - and entertained - from start to finish.

Christmas With The Smithereens

Another weekend Post Of Christmas Past.

The Smithereens first dabbled in Christmas music back in 1992 by recording a silly and energetic take on “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” for the Rockin’ Christmas compilation. The song later appeared on the 1995 Attack Of The Smithereens rarities collection, as well as on the Songs Of The Season compilation sponsored by Borders Books and WXRT in 2000.

In 2007, the band, which by then featured new bassist Severo Jornacion, really showed its holiday spirit by releasing the full-length Christmas With The Smithereens. It’s a fun party from start to finish, as The Smithereens bring their engaging power pop approach to a mix of originals and cover versions. “Waking Up On Christmas Morning,” which can also be found on the Hi-Fi Christmas Party and Ho Ho Ho Spice collections, is a catchy tune penned by guitarist Jim Babjak.

The fast-paced “Christmas Time All Over The World,” written by Babjak, singer Pat DiNizio, drummer Dennis Diken, and original bassist Mike Mesaros, celebrates hugging and kissing under the mistletoe, and compares the holiday to a big rock show. The other Smithereens original, “Christmas (I Remember)” takes a melodic look back and notes, “The kid inside my heart won’t die.”

There are also guitar-driven interpretations of Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run,” Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” and The Beach Boys’ “Merry Christmas, Baby.” “Christmas,” taken from The Who’s Tommy isn’t traditional holiday fare, but the authentic arrangement here gives a preview of band’s later decision to record their own version of the entire rock opera. “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)” doesn’t have as much edge as the version by The Ramones, but it’s still a solid effort, and The Smithereens also do well with “Christmas Time Is Here Again,” one of the rare songs The Beatles recorded for their fan club members.

The Smithereens set Clement Clark Moore’s classic poem, ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas to a jazzy percussion-led arrangement, and open “Auld Lang Syne” with acappella vocals before launching into a rollicking instrumental jam session. All in all, Christmas With The Smithereens is a date worth keeping.

Yuletunes - Part Three

The spirits have done it all in one day! Here's Part Three of a Post Of Christmas Past for the various artists holiday compilation, Yuletunes.

Songs don’t come much happier than Bill Lloyd’s “Underneath The Christmas Tree,” which depicts a guy and his girlfriend spending an evening trimming their tannenbaum. Set to a catchy, guitars and drums arrangement, it sounds like it could have been a 1960s Top 40 hit. Lloyd conveys the holiday fun with lines like, “Tinsel in your hair, presents everywhere” and “You’re a sight to see underneath the Christmas tree.”

Meanwhile, Kelly Ryan is inconsolable on the somber ballad, “It’s Not Christmas,” as she spends the holiday alone “for the first time in years.” For Ryan, whose emotional vocals display a hint of Country & Western twang, all of the season’s colorful traditions have turned a deep blue. It’s not clear why the longtime beau is no longer there, but a reference to her looking longingly at the phone suggests there’s hope for a reconciliation.

Singer-guitarist Herb Eimerman’s gorgeous ballad “You Gave Me” celebrates family traditions at Christmas, as well as the way love and values are passed on from one generation to another. The lyrics take us to a festive holiday gathering at the parents’ home where their children and grandchildren bask in “the love from this fine house.” Eimerman compares himself to a tree that has grown stronger over the years and tells his Mom and Dad, “I learned all my love from all your love you gave me.” Note: Herb Eimerman has created a video for “You Gave Me” that can be viewed on YouTube. Other tracks from Yuletunes can also be found there.

The Critics uncork an irresistible energy reminiscent of The Beatles on their romantic “She Feels Like Christmas Day.” This is probably the only song on Yuletunes that would fit in just as well on a non-holiday CD. Especially when you consider the way the band uses Christmas as a metaphor for the overwhelming joy of finding love on lines like, “Let me be your favorite toy”.

The weekend Posts Of Christmas Past continue with Part Two Of Yuletunes.

“The Saddest Time Of The Year” comes from Spooner, the Wisconsin-based band that featured lead vocalist-guitarist Duke Erikson and drummer Butch Vig long before they formed Garbage with dynamic Scottish chanteuse, Shirley Manson. The haunting arrangement, and Erikson’s guitar playing in particular, make this reflection on disappointment and loneliness at Christmas even more melancholy. It’s not a song to play while exchanging gifts, but its poignant message might make you consider the plight of the less fortunate among us.

The Cavedogs were a Boston band that often mixed comedy with its catchy pop music. That’s certainly the case with “3 Wise Men And A Baby (Xmas Song),” a funny and ambitious epic that begins with a sound bite of Burl Ives’ talking snowman from Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. About halfway through, the guitar-driven song abruptly shifts into a lounge act reminiscent of the bit Bill Murray used to do on Saturday Night Live. The rollicking finale finds the band singing “alleluia” against a backdrop of George Bailey scolding his kids in It’s A Wonderful Life.

The Spongetones take us to a much more tranquil place with their acoustic-based, innocent fantasy “Christmasland.” While they had shown an ability to mimic The Beatles on their own albums, here The Spongetones craft an old-fashioned Christmas tune with a delicate melody and intricately layered vocals.

Listening to “A God Of My Own” by the Chicago trio 92 Degrees requires some thought since it’s a complex look at religious beliefs at what is undoubtedly the most commercial time of the year. The lyrics, “You go your way and have a Merry Christmas/I’ll go my way and have a Merry Christmas,” express a tolerant attitude that’s sometimes lacking when it comes to matters of faith. With its ringing guitars, the mid-tempo “A God Of My Own” has the British Invasion influence the band tapped into on its 1990 EP, Money Makes The World Go ‘Round.

Yuletunes - Part One

Here's another December weekend Post Of Christmas Past.

Released in 1991 on The Shoes’ Black Vinyl label, Yuletunes was an ambitious collection of original Christmas songs created by various power pop artists. Matthew Sweet, who contributed “Baby Jesus,” and Marti Jones and Don Dixon, who sang a duet on “Every Day Will Be Like A Holiday,” were the biggest names involved, and there were 13 lesser known acts from the Midwest.

The Shoes had faded from rock’s mainstream by 1991, but “This Christmas” shows why they’ll always be revered in the power pop community. It’s a catchy rock song with a monster drum beat and chiming guitars that offers an optimistic view via harmony vocals. “Things will get better./Doesn’t seem like it now, but they always do.” Vocalist-guitarist Jeff Murphy would return to the theme of the importance of love over gifts during the holidays by having his kids sing the cute “The Christmas List” as the CD’s closing number.

The punchy “Merry Christmas Will Do” finds the trio Material Issue at the peak of its power. Jim Ellison’s rugged guitar playing takes center stage, and as usual, he’s a master at selling the pain of unrequited love through his evocative singing. “You don’t have to say you love me, I know that that’s not true,” Ellison concedes. “But Merry Christmas will do.”

The Idea, fronted by vocalist-guitarist Phil Angotti, contribute the melodic “It’s About That Time,” which describes winter scenes, church bell, carols, and watching It’s A Wonderful Life. It goes on to note, sadly, that the holiday season seems like the only time of the year when “we all have a lot of love to share.” This seems to be the most commercially successful song from Yuletunes; I’ve heard it playing on the overhead sound system at the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg and at our Jewel food store.

The single-named Leroy checks in with “Santa Stole My Baby,” a mid-tempo song that sets up a crime scene with clever clues like, “footsteps on the rooftop.” The slinky guitar playing underscores the sexy fun of lyrics like, “She makes him cookies./She calls him Chris./Gets everything double on her Christmas list.”

What a cool-looking cover! It’s a safe bet the UK publication Shindig is happy about Donovan going into

the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

An official Broken Hearted Toy congratulations goes out to original British Invasion troubadour Donovan on being picked as one of the 2012 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees. It would have been nice to see Heart and The Cure get in as well, but there’s always next year.

The Brill Babies will be performing some holiday songs along with their usual variety of cover tunes from the 1950s through the 1980s, tomorrow night at Carlucci’s Restaurant in Downers Grove. HornStars are also on the bill.

Coed alt rockers Magatha Trysty also have a gig tomorrow night. They’ll be performing their original songs at the Stage Bar at 4358 N. Cicero in Chicago.

WXRT radio personality Richard Milne has prepared a special edition of Local Anesthetic, the weekly showcase for Chicago area musicians that airs every Sunday night. The Best Of 20 Years will offer his favorite holiday greetings that have been submitted to his show over the past two decades. Each bit is about a half-minute long, although there are some exceptions. Note: The WXRT website has conflicting air dates for this special, but it looks like it’s going to be this coming Sunday, December 11th at 7:00 PM, with a re-broadcast on next Sunday at the same time. The show can be streamed via the WXRT website.

Singer-guitarist Mimi Betinis has a February 26th date at Durty Nellie’s in my home town of Palatine. His current band’s repertoire includes material from his well-crafted solo effort, All That Glitters as well as four songs from his beloved former group, Pezband. Bassist-vocalist Mike Gorman, who was also a member of Pezband, is going to be a special guest for this gig.

Looks like the Betinis show will be part of a special occasion at Durty Nellie’s. The Illinois Entertainer reports in its December issue that a reunion for Haymakers, once one of the Chicago area’s best-known rock clubs, will be held at Durty Nellie’s on that same Sunday, from 2:00 PM to 11:30 PM. The Haymakers Reunion Facebook page promises it will soon post info regarding all the bands that will be involved. Former IE editor Guy Arnston is one of the event’s organizers.

Joe Algeri, the Austrailian singer-guitarist who records with The Britannicas and seemingly thousands of other bands, has another gift for the holiday season. The catchy “Merry Christmas Around The World,” which is credited to Joe Algeri & The Sugarbrits mixes some gritty Rolling Stones style guitar rock with gorgeous harmonies. It’s available for free download at Algeri’s Bandcamp page.

A few months back, Penthouse Sweets rocked the audience at The Abbey Pub with an short set of Nick Lowe material. Now, the Los Angeles-based Lovers & Poets, a husband and wife duo comprised of singer-keyboards player-programmer Shannon Hurley and bassist Ben Eisen, is honoring ‘Basher’ with a classy version of “Cruel To Be Kind.” The chiming arrangement is lighter than the original hit single and Hurley’s smooth vocals add to this new version’s allure. “Cruel To Be Kind” is available for download on the Lovers & Poets website.

Darby Rhys, who was so funny in Flight Of The Conchords, Pirate Radio, and other TV shows and films, is also a standup comedian. His new performance DVD is now available. Not sure if this is PAL or American format. Rhys will be performing at the UP comedy club in Chicago on the weekend of February 17th - 19th.

I’ve been swapping the occasional email with English musician Mordecai Smyth since I reviewed his fun and very 1960s-oriented CD, Sticky Tape & Rust. Smyth recently wrote that he’s always been fascinated with Chicago’s blues legacy.

“I am a big fan of Howlin' Wolf and was sad to hear that Hubert Sumlin died recently,” Smyth noted. “Imagine Howlin' Wolf taking you under his wing as a guitarist.... Incredible people and incredible music. Was there some kind of tribute to Hubert in Chicago?”

As reported by Dave Hoekstra in today’s Chicago Sun-Times, there will be tribute to Sumlin this coming Tuesday at Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn, starting at 8:00 PM. Mr. Smyth should be proud to learn that his fellow countrymen Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are picking up the bill for the blues guitarist’s funeral.

A Lively Celebration For Live Music

Chicago’s longest-running progressive rocker WXRT welcomed the arrival of its latest volume of ONXRT Live From The Archives with a bash at the Martyrs’ Club on Lincoln Avenue earlier this week. A few of the station’s personnel were on hand to greet fans who had won free tickets to the event, but by the end of the evening, it was a previously unknown band from Louisiana that made the biggest impression.

As with the previous 12 releases in this series, Volume 13 offers exclusive live performances that at some point aired on WXRT. The artists involved were either recorded in the station’s studios or at local venues like Martyrs’, The Abbey Pub, Reggie’s, or The Elbo Room. Proceeds from the CD benefit the Lincoln Park Community Shelter and Partners In Health. ONXRT Live From The Archives Vol. 13 is available at Target stores for a limited time, and it’s a must have for those of us who already own numbers 1 through 12.

There’s only one weak track. Whatever intrigue Mumford & Sons once held has been washed away via the three million hours of airtime XRT has devoted to them, and “The Cave,” with its nonsense lyrics and overly precious vocals, is one of the band’s most annoying songs. The rest of Volume 13 is pretty solid. The Decemberists’ “Down By The Water,” despite being a blatant R.E.M. ripoff is a good song, while Florence + The Machine live up to their reputation with the stirring “Dog Days Are Over.”

There are tuneful acoustic offerings from Ray Montagne And The Pariah Dogs, Dawes, and Amos Lee. Govt. Mule’s “Broke Down On The Brazos” competes with The Black Keys’ “I Got Mine” for the hardest rock track, and Fitz And The Tantrums crank out the soulful “Moneygrabber.” Some acts reinvented their well-known songs in a live setting, such as Michael Franti & Spearhead on “Say Hey (I Love You)” and Foster The People on the disturbing “Pumped Up Kicks.”

The Airborne Toxic Event’s performance of “Sometime Around Midnight,” an emotional portrait of a guy coming unraveled during a chance encounter with an ex-lover, could almost stand as a separate song from the original. Both versions are compelling. The New Pornographers’ “Crash Years” and Death Cab For Cutie’s “Soul Meets Body” stand out as catchy, alternative tunes.

The audience at Martyrs’ for the kickoff party was a mix of the station’s diehard followers and younger hipsters from the Lincoln Park area. PR expert/Corporate Takeover host Kristin Kay watched over her minions as they greeted the crowd and handed out raffle tickets. Program Director Norm Winer came on stage to give props to the behind-the-scenes tech and legal people who help make the CD a reality, and dee jay Marty Lennartz also addressed the crowd.

From that point on, the crowd belonged to the Givers, a quintet of hyperactive Lafayette, LA musicians led by singer-guitarist Taylor Guarisco and singer-percussionist Tiffany Lamson. In addition to dynamic coed vocals, the Givers unleashed thundering drums, percolating keyboards, and careening guitars. The songs weren’t always cohesive but that was part of the fun. Lamson would sometimes coo softly into her mic before attacking her stand-up drum kit like a child having a tantrum. At other times, she belted out lyrics in a style reminiscent of Bjork or Ida Maria. Guarisco was simply a wildman on acoustic and electric guitars.

Norm Winer was standing amidst the crowd, and it was a kick seeing a veteran of the music scene so obviously impressed with a new act. After their rousing set, The Givers thanked the audience and promised to return to the Chicago area soon.

CD Review: The Perms - Sofia Nights

Sofia Nights is the fifth full-length effort from The Perms, a Canadian alt-rock trio that creates an impressive variety of songs built on strong melodies and the harmony vocals of bassist-vocalist Shane Smith and guitarist-vocalist Chad Smith. Drummer John Huver also plays an essential role in the band’s ability to crank up the energy at will. The lyrics cover a lot of ground as well, with the group’s satiric sense of humor often coming into play.

“High School High” is a fun look back at 1980s fads that’s set to a punchy, mid-tempo arrangement that evokes The Cars with help from guest keyboards player Shaun McDonald. As the first video from Sofia Nights, it finds The Perms working once again with director Jeff “Broms” Bromely. The breezy “You I’m Thinking Of” also taps into The Cars , while “Mannheim” is a sort of a whimsical rock anthem. Guest vocalist Desiree Smith adds some lighter harmonies to the Beatlesque “In No Time.” The Perms are most enjoyable cutting loose on power pop tunes like “Said And Done,” with its high Hollies harmonies, and “Over And Over,” which features some adventurous vocal interplay.

CD Review: Tammar - Visits

Visits, the full-length debut from Tammar follows a pair of vinyl EP’s, and finds the Bloomington, Indiana quintet mixing equal parts of R.E.M. and U2 from Murmur and Boy respectively. Dave Walter’s vocals drift like a ghost throughout the seven expansive tracks, and are for the most part impossible to decipher. What once worked for Michael Stipe is also successful here, along with Evan Whikehart’s shimmering guitar playing and a tribal beat supplied by drummer Sarah Wyatt Swanson and percussionist Josephine McRobbie.

A few of the tracks run a little long, especially when “Heavy Tonight” and “The Last Line” sound pretty much alike. The energetic “Summer Fun” has more of an indie rock vibe, and Tammar provides an exhilarating ride with the dark and melodic “Yung Jun.” Whikehart’s soaring guitar is in striking contrast to Ben Swanson’s spacey keyboards on the epic “Arrows Underwater,” while Walter’s almost whispered vocals add to the mystery of “Frost Meter” as it gradually builds power.

Veteran psychedelic trio The Luck Of Eden Hall has an eternal obsession for the 1960’s, and Butterfly Revolutions Vol. 1 (Vol. 2 will be released soon) could have easily come from that era. There’s plenty of variety amidst the 12 mind-expanding tracks, from the energetic “Chrysalide,” with its references to “frolicking in the sky” to the ornate “Queen Anne’s Lace.” The melodies are consistently inventive, particularly on the high-speed “She Falls Down” and tripped-out “All Her Seasick Parties.”

Team Band’s latest release Vodka Thieves is a nonstop party that fuses punk and garage rock with funny lyrics. Singer Greg Drama makes each song sound spontaneous, whether he’s describing drunken carousing, secret agents, or the cut-throat music biz. On “Not In Love,” he tells the married woman he’s having an affair with he needs cab fare home because, “Last week your husband ran over my bike.” The 007 tribute “Bond” and epic “Team Band Fight Song” are particularly clever.

The mainstream songs on Verona Red’s Pound EP explore R&B, funk, and hard rock, while emphasizing harmony vocals and energetic guitar playing. “Kitchen Song” is a nostalgic blast that sports authentic doo-wop singing, and there’s more fun to be had on the Brian Setzer inspired “Big Mean Boogie.” The band gets a bit bogged down on the heavier “Sweet Rose,” but quickly regains momentum with the melodic funk of “Sunday.”
